Helmut Wick Bf109 E-4 Yellow 2, Hasegawa A9 in 1/72
After finishing the ZG1 Bf-109, I decided to quickly finish the Hasegawa kit that I had. I bought the Stippling Decals SPH-K72031 from Special Hobby for this aircraft, hoping that this old Hasegawa kit released in 1987 (original molding from 1976) would have the same dimensions as the more accurate Special Hobby kit that the decals were intended for. I also had some extra Academy decals and Hasegawa data decals for the same aircraft.
This old Hasegawa kit has impressive recessed lines and seemed more petite that the HobbyBoss recently completed. Even the cockpit had some detail which you can see through the closed canopy. Building the kit, assembly was tight enough that fuselage and wings and stabs could be painted separately before final assembly.
After priming with Tamiya XF-55, the aircraft was painted with Model Master Acrylics. They were excellent to paint with, being thinned down with Tamiya X-20A. Colours RLM 65, RLM 02 and RLM71 were used, following the camo pattern supplied with the Special Hobby decals.
The SPH-K72031 decals worked without a hitch, minor differences in the nose and tail.
Future was used prior to decals, the again prior to minor panel accenting. Final coat was a 50/50 mix of Micro Satin/Flat thinned down with X-20A.
Thanks for viewing.
Very sharp work George. You've captured the stippling paint effect on the fuselage very well.
Thanks Dale (@dtravis), I did not want to even try to paint the stippling by hand on this little guy.
Thank goodness for the decals.
Very nicely done Emil. I really like the como pattern, and colors. Beautiful job. For being an older kit it definitely holds up.
Thank you Clint (@curtisshawk), I was surprised (and then again not surprised) on the detail on this Hasegawa kit given that the molding is almost 50 years old.
An absolute nice result, George @georgeswork
To me it does look like a challenging task to apply those camouflage decals.
Did you use any kind of set or solvent liquid to make it easier?
Thank you John (@johnb),
The SP decal sheet was very nice, all I used was the standard Micro Set and Micro Sol and everything shrunk into place.
An excellent result indeed, George!
Well done!
Thank you Spiros (@fiveten)

Thank you Gary(@garybrantley)
I remember that kit very well, you've done a superb job of it. The stipple decals look like they were made for it.
Gorgeous work on this model. @georgeswork
Those decals definitely make for a stunning scheme! Well done.
Amazing decal work. I did not even know this was available. I was marveling at how you painted it!
outstanding painting!
