Scratchbuilt 1/12th scale South African Trolly

June 3, 2024 · in Uncategorized · · 5 · 118

Another Scratchbuilt 1/12th scale model, this time it's a South African Trolley, the drawing was published in "The Coachbuilder and Wheelwright, June 1904. Not to sure how this vehicle ended up in an Australian publication, but it is different and worthwhile making a model of it.
The drawing calls for a pole for horses, but I could not find any pictures from Sth Africa, showing this type of vehicle with horses up front but plenty of pics showing Oxen or Bullocks pulling a Trolley of this type, so it soon became a vehicle that was drawn by Bullocks or Oxen.

The working drawing does NOT show any braking system on the drawing, as horses attached to the pole were used to slow down and stop the Trolley, but you could not do that with Bullocks, so I added a brake system to the rear axle of the Trolley. If you are moving over flat ground then you do not need any brakes, BUT, come across some hills and then you surely DO need brakes when going downhill with a heavy load.

No brakes and the vehicle can run forward and smash into the bullocks and kill them.

I removed the seat as well, because with horsepower it is preferred if your seated whilst driving, as that makes it a lot easier to control the horses.

With bullocks, the ‘bullocky’ is walking and using a bloody long whip, along with plenty of swearing to keep the bullocks under control, so a seat is superfluous to his needs and gives it more deck space for extra loading as well.

Added a bullock pole to the Trolley, so bullocks can now be the motive power, which is a different type of pole than what is used for horses.

Just used enamel house paint and added the home made decals.
Even swiped the colour scheme from a photo of one of these vehicles that is on display in Sth Africa.
