Blue Spitfire

July 1, 2024 · in Aviation · · 12 · 327

It seems there's some debate about whether or not Spitfires on Malta were painted in a one color blue scheme. The information I found online was interesting and I decided that yes, Spitfires stationed on Malta during World War Two were indeed painted in a dark Mediterranean Blue camouflage scheme. Apparently this color was chosen to better blend with the local environment and provide some level of concealment during missions over the Mediterranean Sea. The decision was based on the strategic necessity to adapt aircraft camouflage to the specific operational conditions of the theater, where clear skies and intense sunlight posed challenges for visibility and aerial defense.

This is the Weekend Edition of the Mk IX. Not my best work. You'll notice I made a mistake on the right side of the aircraft. And, the decals were lackluster in quality (which I didn't realize until they had dried).

  11. This looks really nice. I agree with you about the blue Spitfires at Malta. It also looks like you need to build at least one more of them... Right now you have 13 on the shelf. Just sayin' 😉

Any excuse to get another model will work. You have a wonderful collection of Spits, and they all look wonderful.

  12. Thank you all for the kind words about the Malta Spit and the collection, which I call Spitfire Palooza. I have many more of them in the collection that are not in the photo. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, lol.
