King Henri Valois’ Bastard

Hey everyone.
So this is the finished bust... it is quite strange really because up until very recently I only painted fantasy, but then I saw something in historical works that really spoke to me. So much so it has driven me to also produce a digital magazine dedicated to the genre. For a lot of people the genre is considered for the older generation and the “rivet counters” etc and so I hope to breathe new life into the genre. It seems every month another magazine dies so I feel a certain burden to grow something bigger and better than what has gone before.
This bust will feature in a forthcoming issue along with several other versions painted by my students. If you have an interest in the historical figure painting genre you can check out my mag here

  1. Truly astonishing work, Jay. There are some projects that leave you staring at them with few words and that's exactly what happened to me seeing this bust. It's depth and detail is exceptional and extraordinarily lifelike.

  2. Wow! I second what David has said. Amazing work.

  3. Count me in among the admirers as well...fantastic work!

  4. Extraordinary. Great job!

I will certainly be checking out the new mag.

  5. You’ve caught this guy just right. I know when I see historical figures in a competition there are always one or two that demand that second look. Such is yours.

I used to subscribe to Figure Painter digital magazine but lost touch. Might give yours a look soon.

  6. Incredible paint work especially on the face. Compelling!
