1/48 Tamiya F-14 Tomcat

March 15, 2022 · in Aviation · · 10 · 1.7K

The Tamiya Tomcat is on the shelf now. I finished it in the requisite VF-84 Jolly Rogers as an homage to the Tamiya Catalogue style of finishing models. This style really attracted me to the hobby back in the day and while I appreciate other finishing techniques, there is just something about a simple, clean build that brings out the detail.

Everything except the decals is out of box with this kit. Paints were Tamiya acrylics, decals were Furball productions. I had no issues with this kit and I loved how the wings and front fuselage install so you are able to paint these parts easily.

For those interested I have a light hearted write up on my blog where I discuss the cultural relevance of the Tomcat and add some additional pictures:

I also have a final build video for this project here:

  1. Excellent result on this Tomcat, Chris @modelairplanemaker
The article and the supporting video are a pleasure to read and watch.
    Well done.

  2. Excellent build, excellent video and truly wonderful article, Chris!
    Congratulations!

  3. spectacular work!

  4. I personally love the finish. High-viz birds weathered far less than the later low-viz grey schemes due to the gloss finish - you often see models of high-viz machines unrealistically finished with over-zealous weathering so this looks spot on. Beautiful!

  5. Nice work, Chris! I’m a fan of clean models too.

  6. Excellent work Chris. Very impressive.

  7. Much liked! That is so well done Chris! ?

  8. That's a lovely Tomcat!

  9. A real beauty! The gloss scheme was easier to maintain, it took a good part of a Med cruise for the finish to show some wear.
