IPMS National ConventionOne more attempt to upload more photos

August 4, 2023 · in Show Reports · · 29 · 0.8K

Couldn't get photos to upload yesterday. One more attempt today. It took about an hour to upload 20 photos, importing 4 at a time, and somewhere between 1 and 3 actually uploading to the article.

  1. Thanks for these, George, some great modelling there. I’ve started a new thread about the problems uploading photos as requested by @editor.

    • Thanks for starting the new post, George (@chinesegeorge). I just finished giving specifics about my problem. I have to admit that I am not posting many things to Headlines because the process is so frustrating. I am sure Martin will get this fixed.

  2. Excellent pics continuing, George! What an event!

    • Thanks, Spiros (@fiveten). One of my favorites is the B-17 gas station/garage.

      • Here are more photos I took of the gas station B-17back in March 2021 at a show in Louisiana.

  3. Great pictures. So much modeling eye candy at Nationals...and well vendor rooms to spend all your money at for those kits you just have to have and those tools you didn't know you needed so badly! Good times. Have fun.

    • Thanks Walt. The smartest thing we did was decide before we went how much I could spend, then I gave everything to my wife so that she could keep me in check. Might have been a disaster otherwise.

  4. I've actually seen the real B-17 on a gas station. That is one terrific diorama!

  5. Glad you got more pics up @gblair. I agree on the B-17 gas station. Pretty cool!

  6. Terrific photos, George (@gblair) And kudos to the club in Texas for sticking with presenting a show there. They certainly worked long and hard and overcame a lot of obstacles. Looks like a great show.

  7. Thanks, Matt (@matthewfdyer). It was a good show, and I can't imagine how much work and pre-planning it took to get it done. I am sure there will be complaints. The event center decided this was a good week to close one of the two parking lots for resurfacing, so parking was getting really cut-throat. It was also very crowded, but that is a good thing.

  8. Glad the other photos did upload as well, George @gblair
Really great pictures of great models.

  9. @gblair - Awesome pics George. The gas station is great!

  10. WOW! Don’t think I could ever get to that level! Thanks George @gblair

    • Maybe they will have a balsa airplane category soon, Cricket (@bikequeen).

      • LOL….I actually have a P-38 Gillows plane I stared the wing but I didn't like the vacuform parts so I never pursued it 🙂

And I dont have anything like that near me, wish there was

        • When I was a kid, I used to build the big balsa planes, put plastic soldiers in it, and burn them in the BBQ grill. That worked until my Dad discovered the soldiers were melting onto the bottom of the grill. Of course, they would add their flavor to our BBQ the next time we used the grill. Vacuform parts are a great evil. I am not sure how anyone can use them. I just tried unsuccessfully to use a vac canopy on a model.

  11. Some of us as of late have had to live vicariously through the photos and travel of others. Thankyou, for posting George. Some great photos and with all cool events there is never enough time to take in everything. Added bonus your wife came along for the ride. Mine has made taken several trips to aviation museums and airports and has always been very supportive of the hobby as I'm of her interests. Looks like the two of you had a great trip.

  12. Thanks, Stephen (@stephen-w-towle). It was a fun trip, and my wife I like to tag along to each other's hobby shows. After we moved to our new house, we realized that we were always accompanying each other when we go places, so we got rid of our two cars and now just have one. I have reached an age where lengthy travel has become a chore, we don't like to fly on airplanes (weird for former pilots to say), and we don't like crowds. Our travel has been fairly limited for the last few years, so it was fun to take a couple of days and go to the convention. I went last month with my wife to a quilter's show, so my wife and I are even for the year.

  13. @gblair: Your comment about burning plastic soldiers in the BBQ grill brought back a memory or two. I used to build ships and particularly carriers as a kid. When I tired of them, I would go over into my neighbors’ yard and set them on fire in their swimming pool. Well that didn’t go over too well with the owners and they (and my parents) made me clean their pool. That cured me. By the way burning styrene is really toxic but we didn’t care back then, did we?

And I know what you mean about jam packed airports and flying. It’s no longer fun. My wife and I recently barely survived a nonstop 17hr flight from Jordan counting the three hrs assorted wait time, going through three security lines and a couple of last minute stressful gate changes. Bet that doesn’t happen at a quilt show!

By the way, that B-17 on top of the gas station is one of the most unique dioramas I’ve ever seen and a total knockout!

    • I think melted styrene is in our DNA, Eric (@eb801). Most guys (girls don't seem to do it) have partaken of the melted soldier syndrome. I am often amazed that we survived some of the really dumb, and dangerous, stuff that we did when kids. I used to tell my students that the sins of our youth would come back to haunt them, and so now I am working through bad knees from 8 years of football in my teens.

Jordan is an interesting place to be coming from. I have a number of C-141 hours flying around the Middle East, but never Jordan. Neither my wife (who is also a retired pilot) or I am in a hurry to fly on a commercial plane.

The photos I have of the B-17 diorama reveal new details every time I look at them.

  14. @gblair reading some of the comments! LOL. Gunny that I am now a firefighter and I have to say I have had my experiences with fire in my youth! I wont fly either haven’t in 40 years, wont agin and I loath crowds so I sit at home and model. Cool you and your wife both pilots!

  15. Hi Cricket (@bikequeen): It's weird the stuff we do when we are kids. My wife and I both won't fly anymore. Too many crazy people doing too many crazy things on planes. But it sure makes it hard to go back and visit some of the places in Europe and Japan that we liked when we were flying. We were pilots in the same squadron, but weren't allowed to fly together. I would travel by boat to Europe, but my wife won't do boats either, so we stay at home. :o)

  16. @gblair I wont go on boats either ; )
