After adding a second layer of random splotches of a darker green, I decided not to do a third. I wanted to make sure there was still some gray to shine through. After adding in the panel lines, I thought I had enough variety to the undercoat that is should make the top coat interesting. I am anxious to find out how it all works out.

This shading is a work of art, Walt @luftwaffe-birdman

Well I made some progress yesterday and today. I painted the yellow and then masked it off. I know it is counter to the way you usually do it, but it is far easier to mask off the yellow then it is the plane for the yellow. I am using a new airbrush which is geared more towards detail and the tip guard collected paint and put a few splatters on it. I think after I get done with some light sanding I usually do they will not be noticeable.

I put the first coat of RLM 65 on tonight, and will add some more variation to it tomorrow. The pictures really don't show the variation that I have very well already. It took a lot of paint to cover the bottom of the plane, gear doors and drop tanks. I think all told it was about 2-1/2 paint cups worth.

    Looks fantastic, Walt @luftwaffe-birdman
For my understanding, you do some sanding after applying the paint? What kind of sandingpaper do you use for that.

Sometimes after paint, there may be some dry patches, dirt or paint lines I want to feather down John, @johnb. For that I use a 3M Microfine sanding sponge, soaked in water. It is a very fine and I don't do much, especially with thin layers of paint. After multiple layers though it can help even out the finish. Mostly though it is for dry spots, dirt and imperfections.

@luftwaffe-birdman - doing the yellow areas and masking off like you did IS "the right way." ALL other color areas should be done and masked off BEFORE doing the main color scheme. As you point out, it's easier than the reverse.

This is really coming to a great conclusion.

Well this is my favorite time of year, but the Holidays, do cut into modeling time, not a complaint, just the way it is. I have been working on the Zwilling, working on the paint. This is a LOT of model to paint and mask. When I painted the RLM71, I tried to paint just the areas it covered on the plane, and was pretty successful but missed a couple of areas and painted the right wing to much. In the end it all works out, I have some touch ups to do, but in general it looks pretty good. With Decals and some weathering is should look even better.

    Great paintwork, Walt @luftwaffe-birdman
Your compressor should have gotten pretty hot after this paintjob.

Man, that is looking totally sharp and bigger than ever Walt @luftwaffe-birdman!

This new Roden release might take up considerably less space:

Oh Yes Eric, @eb801, it is 1/3 the size of mine, and even at that pretty big for 1/144. Definitely more managable in size for sure.

Thanks for the kind words Eric, John, @johnb, and Spiros, @fiveten. I have started the decals...which are scarey to me. I have ruined more models with decals than anything else.
