Thanks, John! 😊 I'm happy to be finally nearing her completion. I may be able to work on those parts Monday if I decide to modify their color.

Thanks, Louis @lgardner! πŸ˜ƒ I feel good to have her moving along again. I need to make a decision today regarding the control surfaces-do I want to lighten them all a bit, or perhaps just make the port flap a little darker and call the rest good. Maybe I can find some more good research pics. πŸ˜‰
Merry Christmas to you and yours as well, my friend! πŸŽ…πŸΌ

The mottled finish on the model looks really good, Gary (@garybrantley). Decals will really bring it all together.

Thanks, George @gblair! πŸ˜„ I've now got the white areas painted and the yellow chin as well. Decals won't be much longer now. 😊

Just a brief update; the white and yellow sections are painted and I did wind up at Kings Hobby shop in Austin where I bought three different brands of RLM 79. I picked up Mr. Color, Vallejo and new tin of Humbrol that I opened and stirred at the counter to be sure it had no dried bottom paint. All seemed okay. I have some touchups in the 79 along with some scratches on the bottom paint to spray over. I've noticed a few places where I seem to have sprayed over some small grit. I'll sand those down before paint flies again!

    Here's the evidence 😊 :

You are doing an excellent job, my friend @garybrantley! Interesting to see the RLM79 differences among manufacturers.

@fiveten, @johnb, @mvtb and @eb801, Thank you all! πŸ™πŸ» The yellow chin was smoothed out, remasked and touched up where needed. I had to paint the sanded yellow spots with flat white to get the yellow paint to cover them, but that was just a small step. Yes Spiros, I really should mix up some of each brand for more variation in that desert tan. Hmmm...πŸ€”

So far, so good on the paintwork. I give credit for any improvement in airbrushing to my new Gaahleri pistol-grip AB, I've really enjoyed getting familiar with it. It is so much different than my ancient Paasche H! πŸ˜‰ 😊

Thank you all for your support and encouragement! πŸ˜ƒ

I think your 109 looks good as it is right now. However, you might want to consider how it could look if you mixed up a little of each brand of paint for the RLM 79. You could experiment a little and try to change up the tonal appearance with the different brands sprayed on randomly in places.

As long as they are all the same kind of paint, (lacquers / acrylics etc.) you should be OK. I have messed up on several occasions by mixing paint types together accidentally. It's not a good day when your beautifully sprayed airplane starts to wrinkle up all of a sudden immediately after you just sprayed on the last coat using a different paint.

Having this happen to you is NOT cool !

So if you decide to go this route, it might be a good idea to practice on something else first, just food for thought.

Man I really LIKE how your 109 looks with the "swapped" out wing. I can see myself building one like this in the future.

Thank you for the inspiration, and I look forward to your next installment.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Thanks so much, Louis @lgardner! I did experiment with the various RLM 79 paints somewhat. First, I mixed up some of the new Humbrol enamel and did the '79 touchups. I also sprayed some on the back of a car dealer's plastic car tag as test to compare the three brands. Then I tried the Vallejo on the model. In all honesty, it was hard to see much difference between it and the Humbrol. The Mr. Paint RLM 79 was also very similar on the test surface, so I didn't use it on the model. That might not have been a good idea, considering your comments about paint compatibility. πŸ€” Then I mixed up some Humbrol 63, matt sand, which is also their equivalent of the lighter, earlier RLM 79 and used it for the faded areas, sprayed through the Uschi splatter mask.

I thought about further lightening the original Humbrol '79 with some white for more variation, but decided against that, figuring I had better leave well enough alone.

This morning, I gave the topside a coat of Future in order to protect it from more scratches and scuffs. I had a little issue with blushing with the Future in a spot or two, unusual really, but probably because I was sticking with my new Gaahleri airbrush and I'm still on the learning curve with it. I do like it a lot so far. πŸ‘

Later today, the two bottom shades get a little touching up and some Future on them too. I should be ready for the decals pretty soon. Yeah, the replacement wing caught my eye when I first got the Iliad Decals sheet and thought it helped give the one-color topside some extra "flavor". I like how it looks! πŸ˜„

You are very welcome for any inspiration I may have helped with! And, I want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas as well, Louis! I hope too for a peaceful New Year but I am keeping my fingers crossed with that one too. πŸ™‚
