After building many old kits, I thought it was time to treat myself to a newer release kit...this is the Monogram F-8 Crusader that came to me in a 1988 dated box. I’m fortunate to have two of these kits... I plan to build one as US Navy & one as a USMC bird. Probably not one right after the other though.

I’ve started working on the cockpit area of the kit. The cockpit seat is assembled and the control stick is glued in place. I need to try to find some color photographs of the cockpit to see how it was painted . The instruction sheet recommends Dark Gray , with a black instrument panel.

These are the squadron markings I have decals for and plan to make . The photos are from the Osprey book on the F-8 Crusader by Peter Mersky. I recommend this book, Mr Mersky is a great author , the book has many photos & illustrations .

Great choice, Jay. I built one of those years ago, probably time to build another since I’ve always liked the F-8. I do remember extending the nose gear a tad to get a more realistic sit. Looking forward to your progress.

Thanks for the landing gear comment , John, I’ll take a look at that when I get that far along with construction.

Those Osprey books are in many cases very informative.

I agree, John @johnb , osprey books are certainly the utmost , as is this classic Monogram kit. I built one many years ago and have long wanted another. I think it’s the best looking Navy fighter of the Vietnam war era.

Today, Morné @mornem sent me some photos of the F-8 interior and ejection seat .
I used Model Master Gunship gray and Tamiya black for the main interior colors , also I dry brushed some white to accentuate the raised details . When I have some more time I’ll try to do some more detailed painting on these parts.

Looking forward to your build, Jay (@ssgt). This is one of Monogram's better kits, and builds into a great (and large) model. These were still flying when I first started flying in the Air Force and we would occasionally go to bases where you would see these. It looks like the seat is really nice as it comes in the box.

Hi George @gblair , it is really a nice kit. The seat does look very nice for a standard OOB part. I never saw an operational Crusader, only Museum birds and in books & movies such as “The Final Count down”.

You youngsters missed all the good stuff, Jay (@ssgt). I always liked The Bridges at Toko Ri for some good flying stuff, and the new movie Devotion has some really nice F4U Corsair scenes.
