Looks even better under the first coat of paint, Ian (@ij001). At my age I don't do many 1/72 models, but a pre-made masking set is absolutely essential when I do. Cheers.

Got some more paint on over the last couple of days. Tamiya XF23 Light blue with roughly 30% white and a 'splash' of purple.

Mottled the blue first, then mottled white for some random effects. Traced the panel lines and shadow areas with 'Field Blue' and left that all to dry overnight. This morning I misted two thin coats of the blue painting one panel at a time, nice and slowly trying to maintain the pre-shading...

...TBH I think this time, I made the pre-shade too subtle as it doesn't really come through the top colour - what do you guys think ?.

Next will be masking and spraying the green tones. All the best from Middle Earth.

To me the painting looks nice, Ian @ij001
It is always difficult to judge from a picture, but from the last picture I would say that the pre-shade looks nice and subtle.
Looking forward to the green tones.

    Nice work here, Ian.
I’m impressed with your pre-shadingading, or is ithis what is called “filtering”? Glad to hear Airfix did such a top notch job on the Dornier. Has me thinking about shelf space and maybe I should forget building my stashed 1/48 Revell Pro-Modeler Dornier and go with the Airfix. I will be following along!

I totally agree with what @johnb said previously. Looks fine.

Thanks gentlemen... Eric, as far as I know, this is pre-shading - I only use filters on my armour builds, and even then, not very often.

Also to me it looks REALLY nice, very realistic, my friend @ij001!

Looks great, Eric (@ij001). I have found that sometimes the subtle tone differences in the shading isn't very obvious in photos, especially when I use my phone to take the photos. I have had more luck lately with post-shading. I tend to be a little heavy-handed with painting which tends to cover the pre-shading. Cheers.

    RLM 70 & 71 applied:
For the 'Black Green' I've used Tamiya's XF61 'Dark Green' and for the 'Dark Green', I 've used JA Green, XF13. I'm sure there's not too many colour purists here at iM but when I post this build elsewhere my choices may raise an eyebrow or two...

...no matter, these tones look about right to my eye, even more so with a coat of Tamiya 'Clear'. Next I'll let this cure overnight, then a very light (2000 grit) go-over the whole surface before another coat of Clear. Will start decals early next week.

You'll have noticed that I've made no attempt to fade or texture the green tones - I'll explain more next week. Have the rest of a great weekend everyone.

Same here, the colors do look very nice, Ian @ij001

I like the colors, Ian (@ij001). The contrast between the colors is very slight in the photos. I have seen period photos of these planes where there is a distinct contrast between the colors, and other photos where the contrast is almost non-existent. I am looking forward to see what you will do with the rest of the build. Cheers.

Ditto from me, Ian (@ij001). The decals really pop against the dark camouflage.
