Eric, I'm not sure what to tell you. I have an Anigrand XF-108 that looks pretty good in the box (apart from the canopy missing - what's up with that?). Since I got this one secondhand, I can't really know for sure how it was new, but it sure has been a lot of work. But you're right, they have some way cool stuff you can't get from anyone else. I guess it all comes down to what you want to put up with to have something different. It has been a good learning experience, though, so I know what to expect for the next one.

Eric, I have not, but they have some cool stuff as well.

One step forward, one step back. I decided it would be a good idea to secure the props with some poly caps, which a friend in my model club was kind enough to provide. Had to drill out the center of the cowls to do that, and when I did, the they split along the seam. Fortunately it was just the cowls, didn't get to the carb intakes or the booms. So I spent another afternoon with superglue and putty and will have to do some touchup painting tomorrow. That worked out ok since I forgot to paint the gear doors last session, so I can kill two birds with one stone.

On a brighter note, I won a Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire IVB trop (the one Spiros just finished) in our model club door prize drawing last night, and also scored a 1/48 Tamiya J2M Raiden kit that's been partially assembled and came with PE and a nice reference book. One of the club members is getting out of the hobby and contributed a bunch of stuff to our shelf of doom build theme. Wasn't a bad night at all.

I'd like to thank everyone who has been following this for your support and encouragement. I sure appreciate it!

As always, life seems to butt in on projects, so this was on hold while I made a trip to west Texas to see family.

Sadly, this model didn't finish itself while I was gone! Paint and decals were completed, then I got the gear doors installed. Nose wheel and strut were finished and attached. Main gear struts were already with the kit. A good friend gave me two sets of wheels from 1/48 Airfix P-51 kits, which are the right scale size for this model. They are great, with a very subtle flattened effect. The problem was that instead of a hole for an axle to fit through, these wheels were keyed so they would rest correctly on the Mustang. I filled the hubs with 30 minute epoxy and microballoons, then drilled them out to fit my axles. Getting the flat spots to the right spot was a little tricky, because they are not exaggerated at all. I did a little weathering, especially around the engines, since R4360 radials are oily monsters no matter how hard you try for them not to be! Pressed the props into place, and with that, I'm calling this one DONE! I'll post pics here and to headlines a little later.
