Nice work so far, my friend @luftwaffe-birdman!
Your ponce wheel does a fine job.
The Vector extras are more detailed (and more correct) indeed.

Engines look great, Walt (@luftwaffe-birdman). I also have a hard time staying away from the aftermarket goodies. Apparently there are a lot of cool things I didn't know I couldn't live without.

Well in between working on the Zwilling I have been sneaking in B-24 time. I have had some self inflicted issues but actually it is not that bad. The directions for Vector resin are way over simplified, which is curious as fine and detailed as the resin is. You are directed to cut off a portion of the the nacelle but it doesn't give you a measurement on how far back and there is no molded line to indicate where to find the line, you have to first put in the exhaust recess molded into the bottom of the nacelle, the end of it dictates where the cut line should be. This is the port wing with the recesses installed.

On Friday the Vector Main Gear Kit arrived. I find it a bit more scary than the engines and what you see is all the directions you get for the installation. The resin is really beautiful, but damn those directions. That said, fortune favors the brave and I will begin the process after I finish installing the exhaust recesses on both wings.

To hold the exhaust areas in the wing nacelle I cut carefully and tried to get the best fit I could which is actually pretty good, like I said the molding of the resin is quite nice. I then laid a bead of medium set Cyanoacrylate Glue and then sprinkled it with Baking Soda, which sets it off and makes a nice hard stout bonding surface. It stiffens the nacelle right back up like it was before I cut out the section of plastic.

That trick with the baking soda seem to work very well, thanks for sharing.

Nice tip with the baking soda!

Coming along nicely, Walt (@luftwaffe-birdman). The attachment points for the new main gear struts look really short. Good luck on the directions.

I feel the same way George, @gblair, I was thinking I should drill out the base and the strut and insert a brass tube to strengthen the main gear installation. I pack my models up pretty good for transport, but gear failure has gotten me a few times. The directions on the Vector Resin leave lots to be desired.

I just happened to see this journal that you started on your B-24D model. I have one started that was part of the group build we had that was called the "Teeth and Fangs". As part of this group, I started working on a B-24 named Tubarao. Here's a link to it in case you are interested.

    https://imodeler.com/groups/teeth-fangs-gb/forum/topic/1-48-scale-monogram-b-24-j-tubarao-assembly-ship/

I have had the good fortune to crawl around inside and all over several B-24's. I have taken a bunch of photos, some of which are posted on my B-24 build journal. I have not worked on this model for almost two years now. I started scratch building the inner gear well structure that forms the upper portion of the wing.

This is where my build stalled.

I currently have a lot of projects underway, and one of them is a pair of Hasegawa Ki-45's that I started as a mutual build with Spiros. @fiveten

Spiros is a great fellow and he proves it regularly. Sending you the needed decals is a fantastic thing for him to do.

This too is one of the projects I need to finish up.

However, if time allows, and you guys don't mind, could I join up here with you guys and try to get mine finished ? I also have had plans to build another B-24D, a plane that participated in the Ploesti raid. One of my Dad's childhood friends flew in this plane as the top turret gunner, radio operator. He was shot down and held as a POW until the Brits overran the Luft Stalag camp he was in. He was only 88 pounds when this happened, and his name was Clark Ingram.

The B-24D was named "Chief", and it was lost over Italy on September 3rd, 1943. Here are some pictures of the aircraft. At one time it landed when the nose wheel either collapsed or it wasn't locked, or simply didn't ( or wouldn't) come down.

This caused some structural damage which was repaired.

When it was repaired, they changed the nose art on the Port side. This is the updated nose art, and it was likely present when the plane went down.

Another B-24 that has been on my bucket list was this one: "Dragon and it's tail".

I have the kits and the decals for the dragon ready to go. Mine are all 1/48 scale. I will have to do something else for the nose art for Chief.

I’m not trying to hijack your build journal so please don’t think that. If I have please accept my apologies in advance. That’s not my intention.

Right now I’m not planning to build Chief or The dragon and it’s tail, because I simply have way too many things going on at the moment.

I’m just talking about future projects here with the dragon and Chief.

Please let me know. Thanks !

Well Louis, @lgardner, I feel absolutely comfortable in speaking for Spiros here, @fiveten, the we would love to have you move on over and continue your incredible build of "Tubarao" here. I think it just adds to the build, and shows how different modelers tackle the different issues the kit will present. I hope that merging over here encourages you to complete your build, as you were doing a lot of neat stuff, and your pictures have already helped me. Thanks!

Well today I spent a little time with the Main Landing Gear, and the Vector resin Wheel Well replacement. Well the directions are at best vague, but the resin is so good it works out pretty easily if you just take your time and look at it logically. It is also nice that the resin casting blocks are clearly labeled with left and right. Between the two Vector resin detail sets, I have more than twice what I paid for the kit years back invested. is it worth it, well look at the last picture. I think it makes a huge difference...just unfortunate it is on the underside no one sees.
