Previous week I received a package in which I found a lot of delicacies packed together with an amazing Tamiya kit of the North American P-51B Mustang. This fantastic surprise was sent to us by our great friends in Greece, thanks again for everything Spiros @fiveten.

The Tamiya kit, TAM61042, looks very nice and is packed with two grey sprues and one transparant sprue. Instructions are in balck/white and are typical for Tamiya with clear painting instructions per part. Three paint schemes to choose from of which I'm thinking of doing the scheme as shown on the cover. Capt. Dominic Salvatore Gentile.
A nice thing when you have taken everything out of the box is the printed inside of the box. Never saw this before but Tamiya did use it wisely for promoting some of their kits and tools.

I do know that Spiros @fiveten does have an A-36 in stash so this might be a great chance to do a combo build as well.
Currently having three kits in progress, so it might take some time to make progress on this one.

Off to my shelf of doom (SoD) to dig out my Apache and present it here! Another combo build with you! This is modeling happiness!

Here is my AM A-36 Apache...

A thought after kit for sure, looks good in the box and is said to build well.
    More to come!

@fiveten: If you go for the kit markings, paint the yellow stripes - the decals are pretty useless for other than getting the proper dimensions.

This is going to be another epic dual build. I am looking forward to watching you guys work your magic on these two.

I have never built a Tamiya Mustang, so I'm way past due for that. However I have built the AM version. It's a nice model.

Just be careful at the engine / nose to main fuselage joint. If not you can end up with a step there, that needs some additional work to get smooth. I also somehow managed to craze the rear plexi-glass side windows... They look good until light hits them at just the right angle. Then you can see how they have internally cracked.

One last mistake I did with mine was I glued the inner "clam shell" landing gear doors in the "DOWN" position. On these early Allison Mustangs, the doors didn't droop after the engine was shut down. I don't think the flaps did either. To the best of my knowledge, this was something that happened with the Merlin powered variants.

    Hope this helps.

You know I'll be watching for updates ! This is going to be good...

Thank you so much our friends @gblair, @ssgt, @tcinla and @lgardner! As usual (!) you are more than welcome to join us with a Mustang build here!

Tom, thanks for the heads-up on the yellow lines, they will be painted.

Louis, thanks for the heads-up on the doors, it is an important detail. Have not build neither a Tamiya nor an AM Mustang. It is stated that the former is typical classic wonderful Tamiya.

@gblair, @ssgt, @tcinla, @lgardner, thank you very much gentlemen, I was looking for a slightly smaller build than my current ongoing DC6 and B17 kits. When receiving this Christmas present I knew it was the perfect one to achieve that.

Like mentioned by Spiros @fiveten, everybody who likes to join us, is more than welcome.

Hi John (@johnb) and Spiros (@fiveten). Thanks for the invitation to join in. I have a Tamiya P-51B that I would like to do in European markings. I have a tiny bit to finish my Sea Fury, then I will post some photos for the P-51. What a great way to start the new year. Happy New Year! :o)

@gblair, welcome, George. Looking forward to yours. Which Tamiya is it? I do know they have several variants.

It's the same one you are doing, John (@johnb). My mother's mom and dad were from Prague, and several weeks ago I was reading a story about the Slovakian National Uprising in 1944. It turns out that the USAAF sent a couple of B-17s, escorted by P-51Bs and P-51Cs, into Slovakia with some OSS teams. On the return flight, they hauled out some released POWs. I discovered that DK Decals has a set of decals that includes two planes that participated, a camo P-51B and a natural metal P-51C. I had the Tamiya P-51B, and I just got the decals in the mail. All set to go!
