    G’day Carl (@clipper),
Instead of pre-shading, I used a black undercoat and then “coloured in” the panels with a circular/squiggle spray pattern that gave an uneven fill. Hopefully it still has that effect after the clear coats.
I tried this first on my Avenger.

I deopped the kit while airbrushing a couple of weeks ago and the port trailing edge wing tip broke off. By some miracle, I managed to find the peice and re-attach it.
Today I was fixing a few small parts of the camouflage when I noticed that the part was missing again. So, I cut and shaped the tip off the spare fin tip and superglued it in place.

Just as well as we gained a 1 month extension to the group build competition!

Nice recovery from the dropped model, Michael @michaelt. Your floors must be softer than mine. I have tried your technique of starting with a black undercoat and really like some of the effects you can get with it.

    G’day Grorge (@gblair),

It bounced off a not so soft stone bench and down onto a wooden deck. I found the wing tip peice amongst the clutter on the outside bench that I airbrush on. The only other damage was a minor dent to the other wing leading edge that was easily delt with.

Luckily no other small peices were damaged or broke off.

I am intersted in how you are going with the black undercoat technique. Post some pictures.

I find that when I just did panel line shading, they sometimes showed as texture as well as colour. I think this method eliminates that while giving perhaps a bit more control.

And it undercoats the paint, which I never used to do.

    A perfect repair, Michael @michaelt
    No signs of previous damage.

The first of the decals went down last night. There are 36 decals used on the two inner pylons.
There are 397 numbered decals on the sheet, the vast majority which are stencils, and most numbers cover two or more decals…

I’ve heard/read horror stories of these decals silvering, even with various treatments, but these look good so far.

Stencils look great, Michael (@michaelt). On an F-4 you are almost obligated to add all the stencils or their absence would be really noticed. Silvering on these smaller decals can be a problem, but yours went on perfectly. One bit of good news is that you added the decals to the pylons before you glued the pylons to the wing. That would have been a pain. Are you keeping track of how many hours you spend on the decals?

Great repair and very nice decal job, my friend @michaelt! I like joking that Phantoms need no technical manuals, as the complete manual is printed on the plane 🙂

    That's a lot of stencils, Michael @michaelt
First ones on the pylons do look great, if the others behave equally then all will be fine.

The lower fuselage aft of the burner cans is Titanium. The following pic shows the characteistic striping effect on the Titanium. I suspect that there are internal cooling ribs that result in different temperature discolouring.

I paainted these sections Gunze SM205 Super Titanium 2 and then masked with thin strips and spayed Gunze H95 Smoke Gray to try and replicate the effect.

The section aft of this is a mix of Gunze SM204 Super Steel 2 and MC212 Iron which was then oversprayed lightly with Super Steel 2 leaving a subtle banding effect.

The side of the fuselage is Super Steel with parts done with the same mix as above.

The stabilisers were painted Titanium with the centre part in the Steel/Iron mix.

The top of the Australian stabilisors had in a black coating of some sort that I still need to paint, which is why I haven’t removed all the masking.

Michael (@michaelt), I like the effect you got on the metal exhaust area. I keep seeing these Phantom builds lately in different forums and it's making me want to more and more take out my Meng F-4E and start on it.

The striping effect looks very realistic, Michael @michaelt
    Great paintwork.
