Morning folks, I'm away from the workbench for a bit now but I managed to get a few last bits done on the Tomcat. Aside from a couple of touch ups needed (such as on the underside fins, which have had paint rub off) I think it's about ready for a nice gloss coat and then decals (yay!) and stencils (nay!)

Since last time, the bare-metal on the leading edge of the wings has been painted on. I used tamiya XF-16 for this, a paint which I have notorious issues painting with as it seems to need so much more thinner than other tamiya paints. After clogging my airbrush up a bit, it finally sprayed out and I got the metallic flakes everywhere as a I didn't use enough masking tape to cover the wing in preparion for the aluminium, so I had to bring out the MRP again to quickly cover the tiny metallic flakes.

I also realised that whilst the F-14As had this bare metal edge on the elevators, the B and D didn't, meaning I had to spray the leading edge of these in MRP as I'd avoided it.

Finally, the black around the exhaust was painted. I used X-18 semi-gloss for this. I found that whilst the MRP Black is very good, like all of their paints it's slightly more thinned down than I'd like and sometimes seeps under the masking tape layers. I used the MRP black on the vertical stabilisers and it did seep into the yellow. Actually, as typing this out I remembered I need to paint a black stripe in the yellow of the tail fins, should be interesting to mask off.

Afternoon folks, back at the bench now and work started on getting the gloss coat on followed by decals.

One annoyance occurred when painting the black stripe on the tail, it looks like I must have put the fin down into some thinners, eitherway the paint stripped off but was sanded down and repainted so is all fixed now.

Most notably the decals have gone on, so far the wings and left side have their markings, tonight I'll finish off the right side and start in stencils. These are by Double Excellent Model, a company I never heard of and apparently have changed their logo from the awful looking dinosaur thing on the product now to a bird, regardless these are printed by Cartograf so have been proving very easy and forgiving to put on. I even accidently put the wrong number on the wing, too it off, stuck the number to my table, realised 3 hours later I needed that number for the fuselage, and then stuck it in its rightful place. I don't recommend doing that though!

    Looking great, my friend @scalerambush!
Yep, Cartograf printed decals are nice and forgiving...

Looks terrific, Harvey (@scalerambush). Nice recovery on the decals. If I had done that, they would have been curled in the fetal position on the workbench.

Paintwork looks great, Harvey @scalerambush, and the decals are bringing it to life, can't wait to see the finished model.

Thanks for the kind words folks.

Not a lot of daily reporting, decals usually take me a few days to get all done but that being said I generally enjoy the process nowadays. For the Tomcat, decals and stencils were done, the tail was painted and decaled, and finally the external stores have recieved their first layers of paint.

After the US Military had their mid-life crisis with the Phantom and must have apparently thought the maintenance crew couldn't remember their manuals so thought to stick stencils over ever single inch of the plane, it seems they began to chill out as time went on. As such, the F-14A comes with a nice sheet of stencils but nowhere near as much as the Phantom, and the F-14B right at the end of the types service life had even less. About 22~ no step stencils, then a few panels near the canopies being marked out. For reference, this is less stencils than my P-38 had! As such decalling was generally quick and simple and most of the time was giving the decals microsol/set.

With the decals on, including the famous skulls, it was time to give it a clear coat of which the Tomcat has two of now. Next week is going to be about weathering, first a panel line wash, followed by some oil filters, and also some oils to make that wing all oily and dirty where it sweeps.

The Cat also got some small parts painted, these are the missiles, phoenix racks, and the parts for the wing.

Let's talk the wing parts, the inflatable airbags behind the wing as well as the part of the fuselage that covers the wing is supplied in multiple parts that can be switched out, meaning 4 parts for wings folded and 4 parts for unfolded. In the cabinet she will sit wings folded as it looks great, as is the only way it will fit! But all will be painted for the photos at the end. Originally a 10 week younger me decided 'MAGNETS ARE COOL' and to magnetise all the weapons, and I do think they are cool but ultimately my motivation is more about getting this in the cabinet finished than doing everything. I do like the idea of magnetising all the weaponry still and much like the interchangeable wing parts I'd love to show this plane with all manor of load outs when taking photos, and admittedly my Tamiya A6M5 which has a novel feature of having the drop tank be easily removable does often get put on/taken off every other month, but really I'm just not feeling the motivation to magnetise everything. As such I'll likely glue the hard points as 2x Sidewinders, 2x Sparrows, but keep the Phoenix and Sparrows on the belly magnetised (as that's as far as I've got so far). Ultimately I do like the idea magnets can provide for a bit of a gimmick much as some die-cast models have interchangeable parts such as wheels up or wheels down, bombs or not, but if I've learnt one thing this build it is that I do have much more love for the more vintage aircraft out there.

Regardless, heres where we are at so far. Wings, Tails, Elevators, and Engines all aren't glued in yet.

Looking great Harvey. I totally get your comments on the magnets. I did my A-36 and A-37 that way, but decided it wasn't worth it for my Skyraider, nor any other payload since. At the end of the day, its highly unlikely that I'll ever change up the payload once they go into my case. I will say though, they do work great for model ship turrets, and (for instance) the chin mounted camera gimbal on an MQ-9 that I'm working on.

I appreciate the complexity of the newer subjects, but the simplicity and joy of crafting smaller airframes can not be overstated.

    Great steps, Harvey @scalerambush!
    Decalling looks super!
Yep, too much magnetizing is to be avoided!
I love joking with Phantom mechanics (we still operate the F-4 in Greece) , telling them they don't need T.O.s, as they are all "printed" onto the plane! 🙂
