1/48 Spitfire PR.19
This is the new Airfix kit that I built last month. In my opinion, it's their best Spitfire yet. It surpasses the Mk.22/24 and Seafire 46/47s from the 1990s due to better detailing and nicer moldings. Others on this site have gone into detail about the great interior, so I won't be redundant. Simply put, it's a nice model with a lot of detail that fits extremely well. The only drawback to this kit is the way Airfix handles the open canopy option. I chose to close mine for a neater look. I painted the model with Xtracolor (PRU Blue) and Humbrol(everything else) enamels. I used the kit decals for a Swedish S.31 but wasn't happy with the recommended red spinner. Fortunately, I found reference to this same airframe sporting a partial yellow spinner earlier in it's career. It's a nice model, buy with confidence!
Very nice John thanks for the review ive been thinking about this purchase and you sealed the deal for me
John, Cool looking Spitfire and something different as far as marking go- nice job. Just received mine in the mail the other day...It looks great in the box for sure and it's tempting to get the parts off the sprues but it will have to wait its turn...
Don't "wait its turn" Eric! It's a whole lot more fun than everything ahead of it. Give yourself a break. Fun kit.
Too bad Eduard didn't look at this one while designing their Mk. IX series.
Hi Tom, your encouragement has tempted me…the parts are off the spures! and you called it; it’s a very nice kit. (I can’t wait for the MK XIVc to come out). But for fun I’m currently building the Trumpeter Seafang. It’s really a shame that they screwed the pooch so badly on the cockpit. I’m building it completely OOB and buttoned up- I may add a corrected seat so I don’t cringe every time I look through the canopy. Thinking that since this is technically a “what if” AC that I’ll finish off in a fictitious French Aeronautique Navale scheme just for something different.
very nice, another winner from airfix 🙂
Bravo, well done - a really nice build! I agree with you, the latest releases from Airfix are sensational, and the prices aren't too shabby either!
Thank you Nick. I can't wait to see what they've got coming in 2014!
