1st Alfons Veljačić Cup
Last weekend I’ve visited the first edition of “Alfons Veljačić Cup”. The exhibition and competition was happening in the City museum of Crikvenica – a small coastal town on Croatian Adriatic shore.
Alfons Veljačić was born in Crikvenica in 1883 and became a pilot in 1914 and took action in World War 1; the local modelling club also carries its name.
As this was the first competition organized by the club, the attendence was a bit on the lower side, but still almost 200 models were entered from Croatian and Slovenian modellers. Subjects varied from kid works and amateurs, to classic models seen on many competition and master class scratchbuilt wooden ships which on sale cost as a small car. Seeing so many junior built models was also very nice.
At this point I have to thank the organizers for a really well executed first attempt at organizing the competition. My advice for the next year would be to provide electronic sign-up, while I am concerned that with greater number of models, the limited space of the museum might prove to small in the future.
The entry fee of just 40hkr (less than 6eur) also granted you a lunch and a drink in the nearby restaurant which was an excellent touch. The date is also perfect, as the beginning of June already provides summer temperatures and warm waters for swimming, yet the high-season hasn’t started yet and there’s an abundance of vacant rooms and apartments for reasonable prices. Oh, and when the competition was over, there was even an afterparty organized in a beach bar, so yeah – if you wanna combine a weekend getaway and add a little bit of modelling touch to it, I cannot recommend it more!
Enough of chitchat – let’s jump to the photos!
Entry to the museum
And a small harbour just behind the museum! Swimming beaches extend to each side of this harbour for at least 30min walk each way!
Some great looking entries there and a beautiful venue to boot - thank you for sharing the pics.
Really some fantastic work, very humbling! Thanx for sharing.
Some great work on the tables - thanks for sharing! I've got kids now living in Croatia - is that where you are located? If so, I'll look you up when I head over for a visit.
I live in Slovenia, but if you come and visit your kids, I might be able to travel to meet up; just let me know in advance where and when.
Thanks for posting these Sebastijan.
Nice stuff - I particularly like the unpainted La-5.
