1/72 Airfix RAF Rescue Launch ("Whaleback")

April 10, 2019 · in Ships · · 7 · 3.1K

This is the OLD kit which has been around since the 60"s. It's been reboxed many times, but the molds are the same. It's small next to the Vosper, and PT Boats, but has a unique shape, giving it the "Whaleback" nickname. The kit can be built in the 1041 or '43 variant, according to armament and markings. Last shown is an earlier build of the "43 version.

The build was straight forward. The only problem I had was the putting the cabin together, probably my fault. All's well that ends...

  1. Very nice Joe !

Check out those crazy turrets. Probably a good idea when it was cold and the seas were rough.

I’ll imagine they were hard to keep clean with the salt spray. I wouldn’t want to try and get out of one in a hurry.

Yours looks great buddy. Adding the crew figures gives it a nice reference to how little they were.

  2. Good to see you "back at it", Joe - been a while. Yeah, those turrets put me in mind of an Avenger. And for whatever reason, I like the color scheme in the last pic better...but that's just me. 🙂

  3. A nice build on both! Well done.

  4. nice looking boat Joe

  6. That's some very nice work on both of them. Still a nice kit after all those years.
