Yeah, It’s Another Spitfire

October 26, 2019 · in Aviation · · 6 · 2.3K

Adding to my continually growing collection (I may have a problem), here's my tenth completed kit for this year, the Spitfire Mk. VII. This is a pretty good kit. It has good detail and good fit.

I decided to try a figure painting trick on this one so I mixed up some oil paint and highlighted one edge of the panel lines. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I like the look but, it's not something you would see unless you were at a particular angle and even then, it would only be a few very thin lines. But, if one doesn't try new ideas, one doesn't grow.

  1. Terrific looking Spitfire!

  2. Scott, 1/72 is not my scale of choice but really admire your Spitfire, it looks like a solid build overall.

The highlight technique you mention is visible on the photos, no doubt about that, and although some might dislike or other like it, it sure helps breaking the dullness of the greyish scheme.

I too have been using oils also in such manner, but in a much more restrained way, just picking some areas where I feel the highlight adds up to the remaining weathering effects. Try some blending with the base colours, IMO it gives a much more natural/realistic perspective.

  3. Cool looking bird! Nice work. The painting really brought out the surface details.

  4. Nicely done Scott, looks really nice. As to your suppose issue of an expanding collection of Spitfires, let me state the following. I have build 18 1/48 scale P-40's, so issue? What issue?

  5. Very nice - like that 2-tone scheme also! Well done.

  6. @guitarhack5 I like your Spitfire! What do you think about wingtips? How did you changed it on long version? I build Spitfire IX from AZ, and changing wing tips was hard work.
