F-3H-3 or F-3E, Demon II

September 15, 2021 · in Aviation · · 9 · 1.5K

Here's a what iffer, What if the got a proper engine, say a J-67 or j79, also with the upgrade is an IR sensor under the nose, duel wheel nose gear,zero-zero ejection seat, fully enclosed IFR probe, F-4 style stabilators, slap on a pair of F-4 wing pylons with LAU-7 missile launchers. With these improvements there might have been some still around in the early days in the Tonkin Gulf or Yankee Station. May be taking on some Migs. The kit is the old Emher with bits from the spares box as are the decals.

The actual Demon suffered from a poor engine choice, the notorious J-40, The replacement engine J-71 was an improvement but had it's own set of problems. a change in mission requirement also prolonged production delays.

  1. Great idea Robert! And a wonderful result too; bravo sir for the model and the concept! 🙂

  2. Exceptional 'what if' build, Robert @roofrat
Great use of the spare parts and getting them fit so nicely.

  3. It looks like you got the best out of this Emhar kit, Robert (@roofrat). Well done.

  4. Excellent whatiffer, Robert!
    Love it!

  5. Actually McDonnell almost did all that (plus a second engine)! The design was passed up as the F11F and F8U had already been ordered, but with a little refinement became the mockup for the Phantom! I do like the looks of the Demon though. (I think it was McDonnell's only single engine design.)

  6. Imagination plus modelling skill equals a very fine build.

  7. Fine ‘woulda, shoulda, coulda’ post Robert. Nice to see the Ehmer kit getting built.

  8. Very nice - that's one way to add some kick and bite to help the Demon live up to it's name!
