  1. I hope they have a safer dive than the recent Titanic team.

  2. So they are diving on the probable wreckage discovered over three years ago? Truly hope it is Akagi. Did they ever find anymore of Kaga? Is Soryu and Hiryu still undiscovered?

And to think it was probably one bomb from one SBD-3 Dauntless from USS Enterprise that sealed Akagi's fate that decisive morning.

    • Actually, it took all three that were dropped. Dick's bomb hit forward on the flight deck - as he recalled, right through the Rising Sun - and penetrated into the hangars below, where the airplanes had been armed and rearmed, and were fully fueled. One wingman's bomb hit close aboard to the port bow and the other to the starboard stern; those were like torpedo hits, opening her seams while the hangars caught fire. The amazing thing was Best's direct hit at just the exact right moment.

  3. Really impressive streams

  4. It looks to have been a very successful expedition, with a lot of great photos of the wreck. Its haunting to see the bow sitting upright with the anchor laying directly in front. Thanks for calling attention to this.

  5. These men died horrific deaths. The lucky ones died quickly in the blasts.

  6. Very interesting!
