1/32 1933 MG K3 Magnette

October 5, 2023 · in Automotive · · 18 · 456

I came across this kit on ebay whilst looking for info on the K3 MG. Being an avid fan of the marque and an ex owner of both an MG TC and an MGA mk2 I decided to buy the K3 kit. It was over priced and overseas but what the heck its a bloody K3, the greatest MG ever produced (says so on the instruction sheet ). The kit is a 1980 USAIRFIX kit and it was complete.

All parts required considerable cleaning up and some fiddling to get a good fit. The bonnet had a dent in the top behind the louvres and had to be smoothed out using hot water. I painted the majority of the bodywork with

SMS British Racing Green, chassis in black and all the "chrome/aluminium " with a Dulux Duramax rattle can.

All up it came out well considering the quality of the moulding and its age.

The K3 Magnette was a successful purpose built racing MG with a 1100cc supercharged overhead cam engine . There were various body styles including single seater type, I believe that less than 50 were built .

  1. Great work on building this old kit. I’m a MG fan too, my first car was a Mk 2 MG Midget, also owned MGA and MGBs.

  2. Super-cool, Ian.

  3. Really nice. A fine result with the kit.

I used to own a 1954 MG-TD I bought for $500, put several months of work and $600 into a restoration (this was in 1966) and sold it for the then-unheard-of price of $1800, which financed my move to California. Of course, in 1976, I went to a car show and saw an MG-TD not as fully-original as mine was (mine still had the wooden floorboards), that was for sale for $27,000!

    • Sounds similar Tom, bought my TC 1967 for $350, sold 3 years later for $2200 to buy a Morgan, not the best move I ever made.

      • One of the three-wheelers? The guy who owns the LHS here has a Morgan 3-wheeler. I think he said they're still in production. I know the Morgan that looks like this MG was (still is?) in production because I've seen a couple of them here in the Rare Car Capital of America.

  4. Excellent work, Ian @firelockg
An MG in British Racing Green, perfect.

  5. A lovely build.

  6. Very cool. Sometimes those old kits are fun because they are old and rare.

  7. Thanks Matt, the prices some want for the old kits are shockers though.

  8. It just goes to show what TLC can do for some of these old kits, Ian. A beautiful job! It seems a number of us are ex-MG owners. In the 1970's I had an MG-B which I drove all over the East Coast. Ultimately, rust issues and the vagaries of the Lucas components had me selling the car. I still miss it.

  9. Thanks Matt, sadly the dreaded rust got allot of MGB's and sprite/midgets, all fun cars.

  10. Nothing like a green MG! unless it's red? Nice job!

  11. thanks Robert, the red ones are faster so I am told.
