Trumpeter 1/35 Mi-24V Hind

January 14, 2024 · in Aviation · · 12 · 328

I wanted to do a Hind because I grew up during the Cold War, and I remember seeing these beasts flying through the air on the news or in the movies. Out of all the Soviet weapons, the Hind placed a bit of fear in me then. When I was in the military, I grew to respect this helicopter.

When I got the kit, the box was massive, and when I opened it and looked at the parts, the fuselage was massive attached to it's own sprue!

The cockpit instrument panels had something to be desired, so I went aftermarket (AM) with 3D decals. A little sanding here and there, the panels went in perfectly. I hate trying to paint Soviet/Russian turquoise/black panels, so there is no guilt.

I did some work in the troop compartment, adding details and riveting on the floor. The sensor probe and the main gun are also AM because they looked better, and attaching plastic and metal wasn't going to happen, so after grinding and fitting, the new probe went in.

I liked the tiger stripe version and used masks from DN Models. There was no way my free-hand airbrush skills would even come close. I highly recommend these masks. They are easy to work with, making painting complex patterns worlds easier.

  1. The Hind is indeed an impressive helicopter and your build clearly shows that, David @dvmozley
    Well done.

  2. Nicely done David, that's one impressive looking model.

  3. Great work, David. I’m not a huge helo fan but the Hind is one that impresses me.

  4. That’s an impressive model, David, and, yes, Trumpeter make very large boxes for their kits.

  5. Fantastic Hind, David! Big and impressive!

  6. Very impressive work! That's one serious beast. The paintwork is excellent, and you have a very realistic result.

  7. Great work, David. The interior is extremely realistic-looking with the 3D decals. I have never tried them but the cost of a set seems to be worth it. I have been working at airbrushing for awhile and I still use masks myself for all kinds of camo work - except mottling. Better control with a more precise result - just a lot of prep. That tiger meet camo looks really menacing on the Hind and was worth the effort to get right. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Well done, great detail. I'd hate to have that ugly beast hunting me out in the boonies!

  9. Excellent work on building this Hind. @dvmozley

  10. Thats a great looking Hind. I tried building the Zvezda kit a couple of years ago. I had a bunch of aftermarket stuff for it but I just couldn't get it all to go together and I trashed it. Too bad because I love the Hind. I'm thinking about getting the Trumpy kit but I'm a bit gun shy after my experience with the Zvezda.

    • Hi Richard! Thanks for the kind words! I have the Zvezda kit and a truck load of after market parts including rivot decals. I lost some motivation as some of the rivot decals didn't set right. I was disappointed for the lack of any exterior detail.

I think you would really enjoy the Trumpy kit. You don't have to go overboard getting a bunch of AM stuff to make it a nice build. The 3D decals are a must as the instrument panels were very basic. They are really easy to use. The probe and the gun are the only AM parts I got for the kit.

I think you should go for it! 👍

  11. Beautiful paintwork, and excellent scheme, and some great detail work! A great-looking build.
