SU-85. Green, boring and soviet, still kinda cool.

August 15, 2024 · in Armor · · 12 · 107

Salute!

Here's a thing i've build few years ago, but since the war on Ukraine begun I couldn't even look at this... So I decided to sell it, therefore I had to do some pics. Politics aside, here it is. tank destroyer, kit with aluminium barrel. Tamiya and Gunze paints, dry pigments, oil paints. Dark grey primer modulated with white, green base modulated with oil paint filters and glazes, sponge-made chipping. No fancy techniques. Constructive criticism most welcome. I hope you like it.

Stay safe and keep modelling! Peace!

  1. Excellent model, Dominik!

  2. A great looking build, Dominik @DominikW79
    The weathering is done beautifully.

  3. Nothing boring about Soviet armor, Dominik. Very well done. How did it build? I started a Zvezda T-34/76 and found the fit of the lower hull pieces to be awful. Iโ€™m guessing this kit shares the same parts.

    • LOL, I mean that it's all green, no fancy camo patterns :). The build was ok, almost oo putty used. If I remeber correctly it was difficult to align and stabilise big parts of the hull while gluing, but the fit was ok. I'm happy you like it! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Great looking Soviet armor, and a brilliant title for your article. Well done!

  5. Thank you so much, Bob! Maybe I should try copywriting ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. Good build, Dominik. Are those kit decals or rub-downs? If kit decals, you did a great job of getting them down smoothly and blending the edges into both the basic paint coat and the chipped areas. Congratulations!
BTW, I still buy an occasional Zvezda kit from a Polish shop that puts a STOP WAR sticker on the front of the box. Maybe my conscience is too easily appeased, but I've also heard that the Zvezda group are 'good guys'.

    • Hello Chris! Thanks for appreciation! Those are kit decals, and yes, they needed a lot of attention and Tamiyas super strong decal softener in addition to Microscale chemicals. Also some paint-on wear effects.

Well, here in Poland we have a special feelings for Soviets, since they attacked us in 1939 together with Germans, they waited 17 days to see if Naz1s are winning, so they were occupying half of Poland untill Barbarossa. Not many people are aware of this fact since soviet propaganda always pushes the story how much they have ALWAYS hated Naz1s. Check out "Ribbentropp-Molotov" pact and also "Katyล„" - you'll know why we feel about them the way we do. Cheers! P.s. Biggest on-line modeller shops in Poland have no longer zvezda kits in their range...

      • Thanks for the tip about the Tamiya decal softener. My background is in music and history. From the latter I am well aware of the topics you mention and the tragedy they represent for the Polish people. I buy from Jadar in Warsaw, maybe not one of the biggest, but they have always been reliable and helpful in my long association with them.
