Dragon 1/48 Fw 190D-13

October 15, 2024 · in Aviation · · 12 · 104

The D-13 was the last operational variant of the Dora. The spectacular look of the aircraft in the Champlin Collection was an inspiration for me. At that time, the aircraft was displayed following the first restoration effort consisting of a complex and convincing camouflage scheme (and the wrong wings.)

I used aftermarkets for the D-13 variant on a platform kit that included the larger than regular intake situated on the right side of the Jumo 213EB engine. Kommandeur Decals had a detailed scheme that helped to accomplish the intricate camouflage pattern.

  2. A beautiful build, Rafi @blackmopane
    Definitely an unusual camouflage scheme.

  3. Hi Rafi

Yellow 10 brings back memories for me. I worked for Mobil Oil for many years in the UK and was lucky enough to go on lots of training courses around the world. 3 weeks at the Honeywell training centre Pheonix Arizona in 1996 was especially good. I was able to cram a lot of visits to places of interest and Champlin was there at the top. I think I was one of only 4 people visiting that day and when the curator found out that there was a Brit in the building I had his company for the whole day. Yellow 10 sat in the last hanger if I remember rightly and when I saw it he could see my interest rise and to his credit I was offered a chance to sit inside thank you very much. Quite a bit missing and again if I recall he told me about the wings and that the hood was a perspex copy. But wow what a day

Oh sorry by the way great Dora now I'll shut up 😊

    • Thank you, Guy.
I visited Champlin in 1995 just before Yellow 10 was prepared for another restoration phase. I felt that the aircraft dominated the entire hanger display. Unfortunately, the current paint scheme is not as good as the previous one.

  4. Excellent build, Rafi. Yellow 10 now resides at the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum In Everett, WA. Here's my attempt to portray it as it today with the Eduard kit.

    • Thank, you Chas,
You made a superb portrayal of the current state of Yellow 10.
      P.S.
I found the detailed and interesting post by Tom Cleaver in MM on the aircraft's fascinating history. Like mentioned, the new look is too harsh to please modelers.
I am contemplating whether to repaint mine as well😉

  5. G’day Rafi (@blackmopane),

I have the same decal sheet and a Dragon D-12 kit on the “shelf of purgatory” that I am in the process of converting and enhancing to a D-13. It involves a bit of cross-kitting with a Dragon D-9 and an Eduard D-9. I will get it done one day.

It is one of those unique end of war German schemes on a one of a kind airframe that beggs to be done.

Your build is up to your usual excellence.

    Liked!

  6. Another beauty Rafi! Love it.
