Junkers Ju-52/3m 1/72 Italeri Stalingrad airlift pocket. Winter1942.

January 30, 2025 · in Aviation · · 14 · 239

This is probably the first time I have taken on a model of a Luftwaffe aircraft. I tend to avoid the subject for personal reasons, although the Junkers Ju-52, the good old Aunt Ju, is a plane that I have always loved and once, a long time ago, when I was at school, I tried to build a Heller model with varying degrees of success. An additional motivation was the fact that it was a gift from someone close to me. The Italeri model is also old, but as it turned out, building it is a real pleasure. Everything came together without any problems. Using additional aftermarket sets and 3D printing, you can really achieve a rich interior. The model can be described as almost "seamless", as the lower part of the fuselage consists mainly of the element holding the wings, and the top of the fuselage has a "roof". In addition, there is a nice option of open hatch and entrance doors. You will see everything in my slide show, which I heartily encourage you to watch. As for painting, it turned out to be less complicated than I suspected, also applying the decals went practically without a hitch. During this build, I decided to do something completely new. Winter diorama using artificial snow. I thought it would be terribly difficult, but it went really quickly and painlessly (well, maybe apart from the household members who complained about the bathroom being dusty with snow ;-)) After making the diorama, all that was left was to wait for the right weather. However, there was no point in counting on snow (apart from artificial snow). Only a little ice on the lakes, which imitated the Volga in the scenery. Well, the German defeat at Stalingrad is well known. Analyzing the statistics of the battle, they are terrifying. One million dead, wounded and missing Soviet soldiers and six hundred thousand German soldiers, dead, missing and wounded and over 90 thousand prisoners (only 6 thousand returned after the war). It was possible to evacuate about 35-40 thousand wounded and specialists by air. It seems like a drop in the ocean of needs, but if you analyze it coolly, Auntie Ju did a huge amount of transport work, which was completely unrealistic to do in its entirety. Many German commanders, including Manstein, knew about this. I wanted to commemorate all those who died in the battle with this construction.

Captain R. will return...

  1. @lis I too avoid any Axis builds (unless they are being destroyed by Allied equipment), but this is a splendid build. And in 1/72? Wow! The photos are really cool also. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thank You Matt @coondog
My Grandma tell me story where german planes attack civilians in 1939 in Poland. Mazovia. About photos. I always try to make it with close connection with main theme of my build. Thank You again!
