Nakajima Ki.84 Hayate (Gale) – Frank (Hasegawa 1/32)
I spent some time on the cockpit, using some bits of the Eduard colour set, but also painting the kit details carefully. I felt this would give a better result than sanding all detail away in favour of photoetch. I also went for some variation in the shade of the Gunze Nakjima cockpit green, which was darker over some black pre-shading. The different shades matched the few museum-preserved pits I have seen.
All surfaces were riveted using rivet diagrams to add realism. For this I used my trusty Rosie the Riveter tool.

So here are some photos of the final build. I tried to capture as much as I could of the pre-shading mottle, but the dim winter light here just doesn't do it justice, no matter how much additional lighting I use. Chipping with a Prismacolour pencil also only comes through in a couple of pictures. The pics are a mixture of shots with my phone and Canon DSLR. Anyway, hope you like the result.
Spectacular! Your work on the IP is especially impressive. Nicely done!
Thanks, David. Glad you like the decal work on the instruments. I thought the extra effort to do that myself would be a more interesting challenge than using the Eduard version. It gives more depth than colour etch does.
Beautiful work, Colin.
Thanks, Tom. Patience and careful work paid off in the end with this build.
It was a real pleasure following along on this build, Colin (@coling). The painted markings really do make a big difference. Well done.
Thanks, George. Your encouragement was much appreciated during the planning, building and occasional repair stages.
Another masterpiece, Colin!
Congratulations on your meticulous work and excellent result!
Thanks, Spiros. I'm glad you like it. Thanks for coming along for the ride in the construction process. Friends really keep you motivated when things get tricky. So many models, so little time.
An amazing result, Colin @coling
All the extra work you put into this build definitely paid off.
Thanks for sharing your progress in the build thread, very interesting and helpful.
Thank you, John. It is always fun to share during the build, especially when it comes to fixes to mishaps along the way. Got to keep up the motivation sometimes. Also good to know some useful tips result. Thanks for following so faithfully as it came together.
G’day Colin (@coling),
This is a great build of a beautiful aircraft.
The instrument panel looks particularly good.
Liked!
Thanks Michael. I appreciate the regards from Down Under. The cockpit was fun to work on, even if it is a bit hard to see the detail when everything is buttoned up. Glad to have this one done and in the display cabinet.
Just gorgeous, fantastic paintjob Colin @coling.
Thanks, Felix. It's surprising how much thought and planning has to go into the paintwork to get all the masking to work. That kind of necessary care and craftsmanship is one of the things I like best about this hobby, along with having fine tools to work with.
Very impressive work on this model, the results are amazing !
Thanks, Jay. Glad you like it. The Hasegawa kit is beautifully engineered and it was a pleasure to build (and modify).
Well done, Colin.
Thanks, John. Good to hear from you.
Great looking build, Colin
Thanks, Gary. Glad you like it.
Love this, awesome job!
Thanks, Butch. Happy to have made an impression.
Great work, and wonderful job painting all the markings.
Thanks for the comment on the markings, Greg. I got lots of practice on this one avoiding leaks under the homemade masks. It was a confidence builder for future projects.
I don’t know which is more impressive- the detailed interior or the painted markings. I’m in awe of both. Far beyond my ability for sure. Amazing work. Inspiring.
Thanks, Mark. It's taken me awhile to build up the skill set and tools for this project. That is what I have enjoyed the most in getting back into the hobby, especially as part of the community on iModeler. Sharing progress in this forum is also a great learning experience. Happy to be of some inspiration!
love this job!
Thanks, Davide. Great to get your feedback.
