Airfix Spitfire Mk. 1 1/72

October 11, 2022 · in Aviation · · 26 · 0.8K

One of the best things of coming back to this great hobby during the pandemic was coming across this website. I enjoy reading the articles and looking at all the images of these great builds. I really appreciate the positive and supportive mood here.
So after two years i feel like i have something decent to show. Therefore, i anxiously present...some more Spitfires!
I built these two Spitfires Mk.1 in scale with Ammo Mig and Humbrol acrylics. Panel line wash from Ammo Mig. I also bought some AK interactive colors, but what's up with them. They clogg and splatter.
The kits are available with many different decal schemes and personally i think they are great (And i want to build them all). Great fit, not too many parts and really affordable after all. Yes, the panel lines are deep but with the wash it just looks good. I wish they offered an open canopy too. All in all a great kit to practise.
Anyway, i hope you enjoy the pictures, i still struggle with the camo a bit.

Best
Felix

  1. Both are wonderful, Felix!
Thanks for the info on the kit and colors used.
    Well done!

  2. Great looking Spits, Felix. Well done! @fxrob
Welcome aboard. Hope to see more of your work presented.

  3. Both are very beautiful. You can’t have too meant Spitfires in a collection.

  4. As a Spitophile ( 62 1/48th scale builds, 27 1/72nd scale builds) I can say great job. But are these the old mold or new mold Spitfire Is?

    Bruce

    • Dear Bruce @rbrucearcher, thank you so much for your compliments! Glad it got a Spitophile's approval on my kits! These are new moulds with a nice cockpit. Unfortunately, you cannot see much of it.

  5. Very nice! Welcome aboard - I look forward to seeing more of your work.

  6. Great Spitfires!

  7. Very nice work Felix. I still am learning how to do this type of painting !
Your spits are inspiring and I look forward to seeing your posts in the future.
Welcome aboard this site where the hobby is not just for the Elite builders.

    • Salut Bernard @bernardbedeur, merci for your compliments! I too have yet to find the perfect way to do this camo the way i want it to look. Here i sprayed the dark brown areas first by using a paper scheme from the instructions and then added the green areas freehandedly. Hence the blurry edges.
Yes, i am certainly not an elite builder but that’s okay😄

  8. You're probably not thinning the paint enough for an airbrush if that's what's happening. When airbrushing, thin your paint to 60 (paint) - 40 (thinner) or even 50-50. If you're getting clogging, you might also want to put a drop of Liquitex acrylic retarder (or another retarder) in it. But it's most likely the result of the paint being too thick. That's a lesson we all learn, since we all make that mistake when starting.

That said, you have a very nice result with these two kits. The Airfix 1/72 Spitfires are nice little kits that give a good result to those who pay attention. As you did.

    • Dear Tom @tcinla, thank you for your piece of advice regarding the AK colors. I have been using both the Revell Aqua thinner (which also serves as a retarder) and the Vallejo thinner...same issue with both products. But frankly, i probably haven't used a proper mix of 60-40. I will try to achieve a better mix next time i use them.
And many thanks for your very nice feedback! Makes me really proud.

  9. You made a great comeback to the hobby with two amazing Spitfires, Felix @fxrob
Both are definitely worth to show.
This site is indeed an amazing place to share and find information, great to have you onboard as well.
    Welcome.

    • Dear John @johnb thank you so much for your feedback! I owe you a fair chunk of credits for my comeback as you gave me some great advice regarding my decal issues with my Zero earlier this year! I was quite frustrated with them but you told me to hang in there. I will post that kit soon.

  10. Welcome, Felix! Nice Spitfires.

  11. Welcome to iModeler, Felix, nice looking models. A 1/72 Airfix Spitfire was probably the first kit I ever built more than sixty years ago.

  12. Lovely little Spitfires. Cammo looks good to me.

  13. A nice pair of Spits! Great work, Airfix has introduce some real gems with their new molds.@fxrob
