Flushing Airport, Vanished aviation history
Flushing airport, located in the borough of Queens NY. was a small private airport, open from1929 to1984. Its ultimate end was caused by several factors, including its proximity to LaGuardia Airport and a local highway, where at least one crash on said road occurred. Also, commercial development around the airport caused the flooding of the airport, the land was part of a wetland area that led to the Long Island Sound which was affected by the tide.
When I was young, we lived very close to the airport, at that time a skywriting company flying SNJs operated from there, we used to hang out with our bikes a road that was at the end of the runway watching them take off. During the 1964/65 N Y World's Fair two Good Year blimps operated out of the airport selling rides overlooking the Fair and N YC
The first twelve shots are from 1968, pic 15 is as it looks now, for a while it was abandoned, and you could not access it buy car. Eventually they tore down what was left of the hangers and rebuilt the road for access to a residential area.
Pic 17 is the current scheme for the Sky Typers,
Thanks for sharing these wonderful pics, Robert! Great memories for sure! Pity that this small airport was abandoned.
Some wonderful historical part, Robert @roofrat
Thanks for sharing. You definitely had a wonderful childhood hanging around the airfield.
Interesting pic's Robert, what of Edo seaplane port, gone too ?
It kept its status into the eighties but wasn't really active. I worked for EDO in the eighties. They moved out after being taken over by another company.
Thanks Robert.
Thanks for sharing, Robert. I love stuff like this.
Great memories.
So many small airports with real character are gone now. The small grass strip where I learned to fly in the late 70’s/early 80’s is now a Super Walmart. Thanks for sharing this Robert!
Great set of pics Robert!
Nice to see.
