ICM 1/48 B-26K Counter Invader build

December 26, 2023 · in Aviation · · 1 · 413

Stumbled across Hammerhead Model Making's build of the B-26K "Special Kay" using the ICM kit and thought others might enjoy it. Run time is just over an hour.

Because of video editing things magically change during the build process. The tip tanks after painting have gained the missing filler caps. The same thing happens with the braces for the opened canopy clamshells. I am still amazed he managed to cut open those hatches without shattering anything. The detail in the bomb bay and its auxiliary fuel tank is amazing.

The one quibble I have in his effort is the addition of the stabilization vanes in the extended position with the plane on the ground. He says they extend when the bomb bay doors open but in the 1980 IPMS article I have, the Hurlburt B-26K is displayed in flight with the vanes extended and the caption says that is the only time they extend. From a safety standpoint I would not want those vanes to extend on the ground either, might run into them while working on stuff. I am rummaging through my books and online and so far not found a clear photo showing an Invader on the ground with these vanes extended and bomb bay doors open. This is just a minor quibble on an incredible build. Enjoy.
