1/350 Revell DKM Bismarck + Pontos Photoetch Set
Hi everyone, here is my latest ship 1:350 scale DKM Bismarck as she would have looked early March 1941 minus the air recognition symbols. Base kit is Revell and Pontos Photoetch set is added. The kit is old and the Pontos set is one of their early ones so there was a lot more detective work in building alone but the Baltic scheme definitely added a challenge. Referenced Stefan Draminski's book for historical accuracy and details, which led to a complete replacement of the bow to include the Bugespiere which was not modeled in the base kit. 3D modeled it based on the hull lines in his book and then 3D printed and replaced the bow, which added more character to an otherwise flat bow. The hull and greys are Lifecolor DKM set and everything else is Tamiya acrylic. I've been working on this for quite some time but majority of the work was done in the last year with the final and the most fun part being the rigging which took 1 week, 3hrs a day. She was 2nd Place in her category at my local IPMS competition back in April. Enjoy!
Excellent result and a well deserved podium place, John @sohjjw
I can understand that this took you a lot of time. 1 week of rigging would have turned me completely mad.
Well done.
Thank you! The rigging was fun - finishing touch that added to a near-complete ship that took me years because of a hiatus.
This looks fantastic! If this took a second, would sure like to see what came in first. That rigging looks extra special. Thanks for sharing and very well done.

Thank you! I dont remember much about the ship that took first, I think it was a cruiser with a clean build.
Fantastic work and a superb result John.
Thank you!
Excellent result, John!
Well done!
Thank you!
Holy Cow John (@sohjjw), as someone who is doing his first ship model in over 50 years, I look at your work on this and am just dumbstruck about the level of detail, the quality of the build, and the painting. I have just started painting my ship and have quickly learned just how much planning is involved in this, and my ship has a simple two two scheme. That camouflage scheme on yours, wow, what it must take to plan that out and get everything correct and done in the right order without building or painting yourself into a corner. Terrific work! 🙂
The planning makes me feel like I’m actually building these ships in real life. But of course with all plans, there were issues and I had to do a lot of fixes and repaints. But the results were more than satisfactory so it was rewarding!
That's some spectacular modeling!
Gotta keep at it to get even better! Thank you!
Beautiful work John, you are to be commended!
Thank you!
Simply magnificent!
Thank you!
That’s amazing, John.
Thank you!
Well built Bismark. It's what I strive for, but not quite get.
Thank you! I guarantee you there are faults in this that I just couldn’t get right but that’s what I can work on for the next one.
I don’t build ships, but this is a work of art. If I was judging it would have won a gold for sure. True craftsmanship.
Thank you! Every subject and scale have its own specific skills and I just happen to be a ship modeler.
Unbelivable job, the riggings are perfect 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Excellent work, when saw the images thought it was the latest Trumpeter model, congratulations.
