Airfix Spitfire Mk.I in 1/48th.

July 19, 2016 · in Aviation · · 25 · 1.9K

This is the new Mk.I. Light years better than their effort of a few years ago. Built absolutely out of the box, with the exception of Eduard seat belts. Everything fitted beautifully with just a little attention to the separate fuel tank panel. The only filler I used was the tiniest touch just behind the fixed rear canopy section; otherwise, no problems! Airfix are still using their novel means of attaching the undercarriage oleos, but I guess I'm used to it by now. Of course, this won't be my last . Hope you like it.

  3. Fantastic. Beautiful finish. I've got four mk1s built with another two in the stash. Not tried an airfix new tool. I need to get one. Lol. Great job.

  4. Outstanding work!

  5. Great looking spit - love the finish work and shading.

  6. Nice job, Tony. I do hope they go back to simple peg and hole struts for their next Spitfires.

  7. Terrific result! Beautiful model of a beautiful aeroplanne!

  8. Beautiful job.

  9. Thats a good looking Spitfire!

  10. Tony. A really nice looking model. I keep hearing a lot of nice comments on the newer Airfix kits, and I can see why when I see these kind of results. Good work !

    • Thanks Terry. So far I've built the Mk.I, Vb, XII, PRXIX, & Seafire17 (two) & a XV as well as the earlier kit of the Spit 22 & Seafire 46. They have all been excellent & keep getting better!

  11. It must be nearly 60 years since I first built a 1/72 Airfix Spitfire, I doubt if there's any comparison! Great work, Tony, and equally great to see the new Airfix kits.

  12. Hi George. Sounds like you're my vintage! Been there, done that. These are a quantum leap better & that goes for the 1/72 kits as well. I don't normally build in 1/72 (eyesight) but I did build the new Shackleton earlier this year & was very happy with the result.

  13. Another great build Tony, guess its based on the Spitfire Mk.Vb from Airfix, released some years back, did you have problems with the undercarriage ?
I have the Mk.Vb in the works and the design looks quite weak to my eye.

  14. Hi Bernd. This is the specific Mk.I kit (Airfix # A05126), Although there are similarities with their Mk.Vb kit, such as fuselage fuel tank cowling & undercarriage. The latter is somewhat fiddly & I glued the oleo strut & the top portion together (CA) before I attempted to fit them into the wing.
The chief difference between the kits is the wing as the Mk.I has no cannon bulges. They are both a pleasure to build & I will certainly do more.

  15. Hi Tony, oh yes please, your modelling is always a great sight, i had yesterday a look of your Spitfires in your Gallery.
I have the tropical Spitfire Mk.Vb in the works.
Things will getting interesting when it come to the attachment of the undercarriage in the construction, completed yesterday the painting of the Spitfire Mk.Vb,
