I finished the basic camo today. It still needs a few touchups, then decal time.

    Very nice camo, John.
    Is this freehand painted?

Yes, John, freehand tops. Hard mask bottoms. Fairly typical RAF practice. Thanks, guys.

    Looks pretty sharp John!
But I always thought RAF camo schemes where painted with masks. I remember a photo of Spitfire wings being painted that way, but I’m really not a knowledge modeler for RAF subjects, just enjoy seeing good modeled like this one 😉

I’ve seen that too. Not all used mats. Photos of most of these types show a variance from real hard edged to tightly feathered.

I've seen photos of what looks like thin sheets of some sort of bendable material used as masks cut in sections. By the way, what airbrush do you use? I'm in the market for a new one.

I use a Paasche Talon for most projects, including this one. I have a Paasche VL for large area coverage and clear coats. The mats were made from rubber and horse hair and ended up rough in texture. Not all factories used them. QC allowed for a 2” variance of overspray. Their use may have been dispensed with later in the war, hence the soft edges you see on later Spitfires, Tempests, etc...

Just checked in, and have to say that is a pretty damn good looking kit. I am not much on British planes but that kit does look fun. Nice work!

It’s an excellent kit, Walt. These new Airfix kits are engineered so as to make the building phase really interesting and fun.

I made some good progress today. Most of the decals are now on. They’re a combination of kit markings, Printscale items, and discoveries from the decal dungeon. That will be it for awhile. The model is staying in Chicago,Illinois and I’m going to be in Fort Morgan, Alabama for the next 10 days. I’ll wrap it up in the middle of the month.
