Tamiya F4F-4 Wildcat 1/48

November 29, 2012 · in Aviation · · 5 · 1.9K

The was a nice kit to build, clever parts breakdown and no fit problem (as with most Tamiya kits); the only extra I put in to it was some details in the cockpit. There was a lot of talk about the floor in this kit (as the Wildcat didn't have any) but I didn't care to bother. This kit is painted with Gunze acrylics and I experimented with multiple shades to give that nice look and I was really pleased with the result. I think the decals are a mix of Tamiya and SuperScale.
Enjoy!

  1. Nice little build, Rickard...good job on the paint & finish. What did you mean when you said "...clever parts breakdown..."?

    • Hi Craig,

      First; thank you!

Perhaps there is just one way of doing the wildcat, as the tree I know of (Tamiya, Sword and Hobby boss, in 1/48 scale that is) all have a similar break down. But what I like is the lower wing is made together with the lower center fuselage, this together with good fit makes it a joy to put together. As the detail is both raised and recessed, bad fit would lead to a lot of work.
I also like the simplicity of Tamiya cockpits, easy to put together yet well detailed.
Landing gear construction that makes for a level wing is a plus.

      That’s about it! 🙂
      Regards Rickard

  2. Well...leave it to Tamiya to not only make an accurate kit, but also make it practically i***t-proof in regard to assembly. And I should know (I need all the help I can get in the 'i***t-proof' department). Again...good work.

  3. Yikes! Yet another nice Wildcat build! Beautiful work Rickard! With all these great Wildcats around here, I'm gonna be ashamed to post mine, lol. Well done indeed.
