Hobby Boss 1/48th F4F-3 Wildcat 'Wake Island Defender'

December 2, 2012 · in Aviation · · 7 · 2.3K

This model went together with no trouble at all. The fit was very good and I experienced no problems with alignment. Paints were Floquil Navy Blue Grey, and US Navy Grey mixed with Concrete from their Railroad Colors line. I used the Eduard wheel bay interior set and Yellow Wings "Wake Defenders" decals.

  1. Erik, NICE job! I have built three of the Hobby Boss Wildcats, but not that scheme. I even have the Yellow Wings Wake Island sheet, too. That is one of my favorite planes and the HB Wildcats are one of my favorite kits. Did you use a vacform canopy? The main canopy slid open is a better fit than I could get with the kit canopy. Well done!

  2. Thanks, Kevin! If memory serves, the canopies on both this and the McCuskey Wildcat were the Squadron product.

  3. Excellent model. I'm doing a couple of these kits now and you're right about the ease of assembly.

  4. Nice work, I love the detail, its a shame that it is so hard to see once you put it all together. Still, you know its there and you have the picture to prove it. I like the scheme too. I want to do one with the same colors, but with the oversized stars on it.

    • Luckily, the wheel bay is fairly open so one doesn't need to look to hard to see the Eduard stuff, Walt. The Spring '42 Wildcats do look great with the large insignia- the one I did to represent McCuskey is back on page 3 now. The Yellow Wings decals perform beautifully, so I can certainly recommend them.

      • Nice job on that Wildcat also. I like that selection of decals. I saw a posting someplace showing those birds sitting on a deck, with the large star and the smaller one peeking out. The striped tail really ads some color. Thanks for the lead on the Yellow Wings Decals.

  5. Man, I just have to comment on that Wildcat. It looks great! I didn't really appreciate the Wildcats until I built the Tamiya version. I really like the classic, rotund fighters now. Yours is a winner.
