iModeler August Awards

September 15, 2014 · in Uncategorized · · 23 · 1.5K

It is high time to announce the results of our friendly August competition. There's an explanation to the delay; the level of workmanship on display at this site during August was really as good as it gets, resulting in what came to be one of the hardest judging tasks in the history of iModeler.

In all, 103 new articles and 1222 comments were posted among the Headlines during the month. As usual, we are awarding the iModeler Best in Show title to the entry that wins this month’s prize, but also list runner-ups as Honorable Mentions. We think (especially this month) that all are great modeling accomplishments that deserve recognition. The judging committee was @editor, @aisak and @magnusf.

iModeler Best in Show

Our winner is Mike Grant's Skeletal Fokker Dr. I. Pictures go a long way explaining why we picked this model as a winner, but Mike's own words perhaps reflect his achievement even better:

"I’ve always had a phobia about photo-etched parts. Paint won’t stick to them, they fly off into oblivion when picked up with tweezers, they bend where they shouldn’t and you can’t sand them to shape; it’s a pretty unforgiving medium. I hoped this build of Eduard’s ‘strip-down’ 1/72 Fokker triplane would help me get over my fears."

Yes, it takes a dose of madness to tackle an entire model in photo-etched metal. We have seen but a few of these tiny kits built before, but never finished to the degree of realism represented by Mike's Fokker. This model wins the iModeler Best in Show award for August.

But wait, there is more! – the Random Award

We are also awarding a prize as a token of appreciation to all our contributors. This is selected through an entirely random draw among all the entries of the month. This time, our lucky winner is Rob Pollock with “Big Fish” Revisited. A big thank you for enriching iModeler with these awesome diorama builds!

  5. Congratulations for these nice models.
The fokker is amazing and I think it's not so easy to find a such big can of paint of Tamiya. Is it a 1 liter bottle ? 😉
I particularly appreciate the Stirling and the spit too.

  6. With out a doubt our first place winner is well deserved.
Nice to see a land based vehicle get an honorable mention.
    Congratulations to all.

  7. Brilliant models from all the winners, congratulations to everyone, it's what makes this site so great.

  9. This month's top award for Mike's Tri-plane is certainly well deserved. Congratulations to all the winners, their work was outstanding.

  10. Congrats to all the winners! The models here just keep getting better and better,,,

  11. What a surprise! I thank everyone for all the kind words you have written in my posts. And with all of the great models you guys have submitted, I am a bit stunned. It is my pleasure to participate in such a fine forum. And with the great modelers here. I'm not worthy!
    OK I'll shut up now.
    California Steve

  14. Well deserved wins all round but especially to Mike.
    N.

  15. High fives all around…….nice work guys.

  16. Excellent workmanship all around!

  17. I've seen one of those Dr.I kits in the box, and you couldn't get me to take one on if you paid me good money. So that achievement by Mike is a Very Serious Achievement Indeed, in my book. The diorama is extremely creative. This is a great site for getting encouragement and ideas.

  18. It takes serious skill to put photo etch together at the best of times, even in large scale. This is just unbelievable Mike! All amazing models, congrats to all.

  19. I'm genuinely surprised by this award, but very appreciative - of the judging team, and to you guys for the kind comments 🙂 Congratulations to all the finalists.
