1/48 Hasegawa P-40N Warhawk “White 21”

November 22, 2015 · in Aviation · · 16 · 3K

This is my recently finished P-40N-5 with the markings of “White 21” from 74FS 23rd FG (Kweilin – China). This Warhawk (serial number 42-105009) was flown by Capt. Harylyn S Vidovich. Due to instructions of decal set , Capt Vidovich was a full-blooded American Indian despite his Slavic last name. His warhawk was fitted with larger 30" x 10" early style wheels instead of 27" light weight late wheels, a common modification on CBI theater of operations.

Cockpit modified by Eduard PE instrument panel and seat from True Details. Components painted to US interior green by using Gunze acrylics.

Department of Correction” Seamless Air intake set used in the nose section.

Lower surfaces painted to Neutral grey and upper surfaces to Olive drab by Gunze Sangyo acrylics. Decals are from Zotz decals ZTZ48033.

Wheels and exhaust are from Ultracast goodies. Vacuform sliding canopy part is from Squadron .

  1. That is a beauty Tolga, nice touch on the weathering. It sure looks different without the red in the shark mouth.

  2. Very nice job on this one Tolga! The only Warhawk markings that is as stunning as this one is the skull markings. Very nice weathering!

  3. Is'nt she a beauty! How can anything in dirty Olive Drab be beautiful? Just see above post. Great build (as usual).

  4. One of the better P-40's I've seen done...stunning build, sir.

  5. Really nice, another Tolga masterpiece.

One problem (it's Hasegawa's problem, really) is that since Hasegawa doesn't mold the windscreen with the surrounding fuse;age skin in the 1/48 kit like they do with the 1/32 kit, their windscreen leaves a minor "gap" that's built in to the design. I've found a way around that to get a windscreen connection that looks like the 1/32 kit, is to run a line of white glue around the join of windscreen to fuselage. It fills in the gap and becomes "invisible" when it dries, thus solving Hasegawa's design problem.

The above is obviously only a criticism of Hasegawa's design team. The model is wonderful.

  6. A great looking build, Tolga.

  7. Still one of my favourite WWII aircraft kits, so I am very biased. Great model, Tolga, excellent finish on a relatively plain scheme,

  8. Very nice Tolga, I always enjoy a nice P-40, and this one is a marvelous looking build. Good job !

  9. Complete Curtiss I like paint and finish

  10. Great looking warhawk - you did a great job making the otherwise drab finish really stand out with your shading and weathering. Excellent! (and as I've said on numerous occasions - sorry!) the P-40 is one of my favorite iconic aircraft.

  11. Thanks for your comments...

  12. Nice work. One of the best times of my young years was when my brother took me out to an airfield near Livermore California and I got to see a P-40 up close, then got to see it and a C-47 do touch and goes. Your kit captures the look wonderfully!

  13. Absolutely gorgeous. This is exactly the style of painting I want on my models. Ah, one day...

  14. Once again Tolga you've taken what could be a boring and mundane subject and have managed to( "say the most using the least") make it look interesting and exciting through the subtle (modeling) applications of color, dirt and grime. A great character study of the P-40. Its my understanding the Turks flew P-40's given to them by the British.

Two thumbs and my pick for "Model of the Month,"

  15. Fantastic P-40N. The 2 tone finish top camo and weathering are perfection. Congrats on a great build.
