J1N1 Gekko

January 25, 2017 · in Aviation · · 18 · 2.5K

Tamiya, . Beautiful model, interesting plane. Started its life as a heavy fighter, converted into an recce plane then finally evolved into a nightfighter. This represents the early, humpbacked version with 4 cannons(2 fining obliquely up,and 2 down). Crewed by two.

Started it 10 years ago, wasnt happy with the finish, stripped the paint and shelved it. Was on my to-do list for years. finally got my groove to finish it.

I added Eduard PE to the interior with some scratchbuilding. Mixed a clear aotake color and shot it over an aluminum base. The fuselage was basecoated in black then spottedly painted with a lightened green, followed by an blending coat of a acrylic paint mixed with lacquer thinner. Washed, then finished with a semi-matte coat. Hienomarus are done with masks, markings are Tamiyas thick decals. Not my best work all in all, but im really happy with the finished product. Sits just fine in the case.

  1. The weathering looks great, and the interior came out looking pretty awesome - well done Matija!

  2. Nothing to be ashamed about for this project! Very nice shading on the paint, and the interior detail is excellent. Well done.

  3. Looks really good to me. One you don't see built too often. Towards the end of the war, the Japanese were using all sorts of aircraft not originally designed as nightfighters as such. Zeroes, Myrts, Judys, Dinahs- with varying degrees of success.

  4. This is a fantastic build. I really like the detailed pictures of the interior. As the others have stated, well done !

  5. I can but only echo the above comment(s)...and that interior color is spot-on.
