CityBird MD-11
Evening all,
I used to build lots of airliners but had lost a little interest over the last few years. However, I have always loved the MD-11 and when MicroMir released their’s in a 1/144th scale injection-molding I decided to have a go at it.
It’s your typical short-run kit with a bit of flash here and there and no locating tabs etc, but it does have lovely surface detail and although it didn’t have the quality of fit such as those from the latest Zvezda or Revell, it went together pretty well.
I bought the Eastern Express KLM edition of the kit, but I really like the colourful and non-white CityBird scheme so bought some aftermarket decals from Daco which, as usual went on perfectly.
Paints were from the Humbrol and Xtracolour enamel ranges, with a coat of Humbrol Satin Cote to finish off.

Beautiful build!! Nice to see it. My first airline flight was on a DC10 sending me to boot camp, so many moons go.

Just stunning, and Airliners don’t usually get my attention. The green is flawlessly painted. Great work here Tom

I take it your love of this thing has nothing to do with ever having been forced to fly in one as a passenger (god-bloody-AWFUL!!!!). I remember when these dogmeat airliners were common here in the US, an airline pilot friend of mine sent me a copy of a cartoon of a DC-10 from the American Airlines pilot’s lounge at LAX – the airplane with an Edsel grill on its nose, which is what they thought of it.
Nice model of the worst jetliner ever made other than the godawful Lockheed Tri-Star.
Why Douglas no longer exists and finally succumbed to their 50 year competitor, Boeing.

Love the color scheme! Marvel at the quality of your build. I always found it hard to get airline models to look good but u have no problem in this area!

If I had known you had an interest with the MD-11 I would have offered you my Welsh Models kit. We all know how much you love your vacforms. I would have happily taken the MM kit off our hands as well! You have done a great job on it. I have another boxing of the kit which comes with the markings you finished yours in. THought Mine will be built with a Finnair scheme when the time comes.
You have done another fine job on your, I hope mine turns out as well.
