Special Hobby 1/48 Fokker D.XXI, No.221 Tlt. Herman Doppenberg May 10th, 1940

June 17, 2020 · in Aviation · · 21 · 3.6K

Finally I finished the

This is No. 221 flown by Tlt. Herman Doppenberg on May 10th, 1940.
He was able to down a Bf109E that morning.
The aircraft was destroyed on May 14th during an attack on Schiphol airfield.

Definitely not one of my best builds as I have to say.
The build was very challenging, first time I worked with resin and PE material.
Especially the camouflage was really difficult to get it more less in the correct shape.
Used masking tape and tried to cut out the correct shapes.
For the antenne and the cables to strengthen the tail, I used bare thin metal wire.
Turned out not the way I was expecting but I will take it as a lesson learned.
Colors used were from Vallejo Model Air, GreyBlue 71.103, DeepDarkGreen 71.310, Mixture of PurpleBrow 71.402 and BrownViolet 71.264 with a 1:4 ratio.
Entire model is finished with a matt varnish.
Next time I also need to use a primer, so far I always painted straight on the plastic.
Overall, taking the struggles into account, I'm pretty ok with it.

Any advise for improvements are always welcome.
Stay safe...

  1. John, this sort of camouflage is always challenging, and you should be proud of your work with this one, because the kit is also no shake & baque. I like it and god knows it’s one of those planes I would built with a light heart.

  2. That's a really great model, John. You've put a lot of quality work at it and it shows.
It's a Special Hobby, meaning that your great result is some serious achievement.
Also the camo is NOT among the easiest and you did it super.
    All the best!

  3. This looks great John! All the hard work paid off. I'm working on the Micromir Fokker G1 and will have to duplicate the same type camouflage. I'm going to use the Hataka Dutch paint set I just bought. Again, great work John!

  4. Really wonderful!

Excellent job matching the camouflage colours on the Dutch Defender.

  9. Well done John, she looks good from here, especially with such a challenging camo scheme.

  10. A great build of a subject not often seen modeled! I think it came out very well.

  14. Nicely done build, John, and quite successful camouflage. Your clear photos of the interior and engine are very helpful building guides. Thanks for posting, and congratulations for completing such a convincing model!
