Testors 1/48 F-19

April 20, 2021 · in Aviation · 25 · 2.6K

Man it's been a while...

I picked this up at an "antique" store for a couple bucks and decided to update the paint scheme.

I tried to create a stone look on the base by over-spraying Lt gray, Dk gray, black and white.

I hope you like it πŸ™‚

  1. That’s a blast from the past. Nice work. I was just reading that Kelly Johnson thought rounded features, as on this kit, would be the way to go for stealth. Lockheed’s computer guys convinced him that faceted, flat, angular shapes would work better because the design computers of the day could handle that route much easier.

  2. Uhhhh, This is what that aircraft actually DOES look like. Shhhh, it's a secret. Nice job.

  3. Love your job and your paint update, Troy!
    Looks so cool!
I have the Italeri (Testors) Mig-37 cousin kit to build.
Your build is definitely an inspiration.

  4. Never heard of it or seen this before. Then again I really lost interest in modern jets after the F-14, 15, 16 series and of course the most fun of the time frame, the A-10. Nice presentation of a what could have been idea.

Fascinating idea though, and funny how design was dictated by computing capabilities @j-healy, but understandable. It also simplifies construction. I recollect reading that when the initial P-51 was built, all the curves on the aircraft could be expressed in "simple" algebraic expressions. It simplified the building of forms and the building of the aircraft. Beautiful freehand curves are often difficult to replicate...just ask the engineers at Tamiya, Great Wall, Airfix...et al.

  5. Nice choice Troy!
    A great looking aircraft.

  6. Great looking new paint job! This kit has some largely unknown history among young folks these days..

The release of this kit was extremely popular and caused quite a stir in government circles. I learned about this kit while reading "Skunkworks" which I would highly recommend.

  7. Great job done, Troy.
Unknown aircraft to me but your build got my interest to start some research on this one.
    Well done.

  8. Nice work on the model and stand Troy, great colour selections.
I have Italeri's 1/72 F-19 and MiG-37 Stealth's still sitting on my 'to do' shelf.

  9. Boy, does this bring back memories, Troy (@troy_brindack). Well done. Thanks for sharing.

  10. I remember all the Lockheed guys I knew at the time laughing about this if you asked them if it had any relationship to reality, since at the time no photos of the F-117 had been seen.

    Nice work on this.

  11. Now I know where all the ufo rumors came from...! Nice!

  12. Nice job on your build, looks great. I remember building this kit when it came out. It was a fun build. I wish I knew where it it ended up. Not too long after this kit popped out, the F-117 made its appearance. Still a neat kit to have displayed.

  13. Definitely interesting, and definitely liked.
