Chance for some cheap aircraft models

October 10, 2022 · in News · · 11 · 0.9K

Hopefully I'm not violating any iModeler rules here... but here goes.

A few months ago an older modeler passed away, and his son asked us to take about 1800+ models (mostly aircraft) off his hands, only asking that we get them donated to those who would build them. It cost us about $400 to rent a UHaul truck, buy boxes, and transport them from Ada to Tulsa, OK.

We let our club members have first dibs (without charge), and still have over 1200 kits left. We are holding a draft this week: $15 buy-in and $1 per model for each model you "win" in the draft - up to 75 kits. We just need to recoup the $400.

If you are anywhere within driving distance and would like to participate, connect with me ASAP, as the draft submissions need to be in by Friday night. Below is a like to a google sheet showing the inventory.

PM me for more details if you're interested.

  1. Wish I were close, Greg!

  2. A pity I'm not living closer, Greg @gkittinger

  3. Great opportunity. If I had more room in the closet, I'd consider pleading you to play proxy for me (which I am respectfully not doing)... a lot of buildable kits in that lot. I'm confident your club will break even, good luck!

  4. Sorry for your friend/acquaintance/fellow builder's passing.
But, Jeez, I thought I was a collector! I am impressed!

  5. Sent a PM your way Greg.

  6. These models are everywhere I turn...Can't get away from them 😉
But seriously if you are anywhere near Tulsa Ok this is a tremendous opportunity to add to the stash.

  7. Bless you for taking this task on Greg @gkittinger and fellow club members! - a great relief for his family to know that the kits have been dealt with and gone to good homes!
I'm a bit far away at the moment otherwise I would be happy to take some off your hands!

  8. We're all going to be there someday, aren't we?

  9. Nice gesture by the family

1200 kits could mean choosing 3 kits per month as a prize for a imodeler winner, during...30 years! (and yes, with the compromise of publishing it in Imodeler, once finished!)... what do you think?

If I could choose (and pay all delivery costs, naturally) I would go for any 1/72 Boston, Halifax, Ventura, and for any II WW matchbox!

  10. As you can see from the inventory, many of the kits are old, so don't think they would fit the profile of "prizes!"

We'll we really don't want to get into shipping (and all the time involved), so we'll either find an inventory buyer who might make a decent offer, or vend them off at area contests (which helps us attend the shows at lower cost).

  11. Of course, Greg, you are the responsible for this task to distribute such a massive collection. I was just pointing a possible connection between Imodeler and "we get them donated to those who would build them" as a window of those kits really being built and enjoyed.
    Cheers!
