1/72 Airfix Gloster Javelin T.3

January 27, 2023 · in Aviation · · 10 · 0.8K

My Gloster T.3 as made in Feb 2022.

Paints used are Vallejo Model Color Dark Sea Grey, Dark Green, brush painted & Halfords spray can Mini Silver. The masks for the camo scheme were home made using 40mm Tamiya tape cut to shape. Gloss clear cote was done using Humbrol Spray Tin Acrylic Gloss varnish.

Decals used are the kit decals.

The only added mods are the two x camera housings under the canopy between the front and rear seats as well as the antennas fitted on top and below tail plane as well as lower fuselage. Also made the pitot tube as the kit one broke. The kit supplied pitot tube looked very flimsy and bent easily.

The nose gear strut might need to be strengthened as it seems to be buckling under the nose weight. To do this I will cut the strut, drill both the upper and lower part of the strut and then insert a thin steel rod.

  1. I love the way aircraft of the '50s seem to have such strong national characteristics. British, Soviet and U.S. aircraft especially seem to me to each have their own distinct aesthetic. It's almost like something from a science fiction film, where the art department gave each faction a unique look so the viewers could easily tell them apart.

  2. Beautifully done Phillip !

  3. One of my favourite 1950’s jets, in fact, one of my favourite aircraft of all time, nicely modelled with this Airfix kit.

  4. Congratulations Phillip, a great result.

  5. Nice work, Phillip! I forgot Airfix did one in 1/72.

    • I have also done the old Frog 1/72 Javelin FAW.9 with 29 Sqn markings and in flight. Still need to get a base made to show it and an RRAF No 1 Sqn Hunter FGA.9 in flight along side it. They flew along the Zambezi and over Kariba dam wall in 1966.

  6. Amazing build on a distinctively looking and attractive bird, Phillip!
    Well done!

  7. Nicely done Phillip.

  8. Great achievement on this Javelin, Phillip @phillipe50
A pity about the antenna but your scratch build replacement looks even better.

  9. Very nice! The old kit built up well.
