Happy 2023 All,

I've been itching to do another wood boat kit but I did not want to get into a long term project so I went with this Model Shipway's 18th Century Long Boat.
This was a nice change of pace and fun to build and I'm pleased with the results.
As always KEEP IT FUN!

  1. That is really impressive. I love the idea of boat building but have never gotten up the nerve. Very well executed and a great mantle piece.

  2. That looks like a gorgeous kit, and a relaxing build! The construction method is fascinating and no-doubt meant to teach a thing or two about building boats, but I especially like how real it looks painted, and with all the rigging blocks and tackles in place. Thank you for sharing the build in pictures!

  3. Great job on this!

  4. Fantastic job, Gary! Have no experience at all with wooden ship models, all I can say is: wow!
    Happy new year!

  5. Indeed very impressive, Gary @gwskat
No experience in building wooden models myself, but this looks like real fun.
Especially the rigging looks very impressive.

  6. The planked hull looks lovely, Gary, and sets off the rest of the ship very well.

  7. That looks really nice and thanks for all the "in progress" shots.

I once heard that for every 100 wooden ship model kits that gets sold, 5 get started and 1 gets finished. So if that's true, Major Kudos to you!

    • Thanks, Tom.
I could see where that stat could be true. It's a totally different mind set to build wood vs. plastic. Fortunately I've finished the four I've built.

  8. Beautiful work. I started a few of these and never finished. Kudos for your perseverance.

  9. That's some impressive rigging on an equally impressive build, Gary.
I gotta ask if while building, were you tempted to sing: I'se the b'y that builds the boat ?

  10. Spectacular Gary. Wooden models are the original builds. Being a woodworker I should get me one of these !

  11. That is really a remarkable build. I love that it is made of wood, and then all that rigging for such a little boat. Wow! I think it is a beautiful piece of modeling.

  12. A little different but absolutely beautiful. Your craftsmanship as an ‘all-rounder’ is so impressive, Gary. Whatever you turn your hand to, the result is wonderful.

  13. I'm impressed!

  14. A great build! You also could have sung. "What do you do with a drunken sailor, put him a long boat till he sobers"

  15. Looks fantastic! I have that same kit to do as my first wooden ship model. Your photos will be a great help!

  16. I really admire the work and other ship/ boat builders do with planked siding.

  17. Great build, Gary, very inspiring!
I've never built wooden kits before (mostly plastic and miniatures, with some scratch building here and there). A wooden ship has always been a dream kit, and this one looks like it would be a great place to start. Would you recommend it for a first go?

    • Josh. Thank you for the compliments.
I have built a couple of other ships but I am far from a wood kit expert, mostly build plastic kits. In my opinion I would probably start with something different...a bit bigger. My advice is check around on some of the ship modeler sites to see what's recommended as beginner kits. Good luck!
