1/48 Tamiya Ki-61 Hein
As anyone who has built this knows, it's a fabulous kit. I enhanced it with Quinta cockpit decals and Quickboost exhausts and gun barrels. National and fin markings were painted using home made stencils. The model was painted using various shades of Vallejo Metal Color paints. The cockpit and wheel well khaki/tan color as well as the prop and spinner red brown are home brew mixes. The leading wing edge yellow I.D. panels were painted using Pollyscale Japanese deep yellow. The model depicts an aircraft operating with the 7th Operational Training Squadron, April 1945, in Palembang, Sumatra.
Thanks for the inspiration @dtravis. I just found one of these on Amazon for $35 delivered in two days. ("Make him an offer he cannot refuse.")
This looks great.
@tcinla Thanks Tom. You indeed got a smokin' deal on this,
Great result, Dale @dtravis
The shading did came out perfectly, as also does you own homebrew mixes.
Well done.
Very sharp Dale
Amazing result, Dale!
Well done!
Nice job, Dale. I like the paint/weathering...very subtle. Well done.
Nice work, Dale. I’m seeing more and more guys using Vallejo metallics with great results. Is the finish durable in your opinion? I haven’t had good luck with water based acrylic paints.
@j-healy Yes John, the finish is durable as long as you prime first. I use Vallejo gloss black primer. I let the metal coat dry for a least 24 hours and had no problems masking over it.
Super build Dale, the finish suits the sleek Hein to a tee, nice one 👍
Nice Hein and great finish. I'll have to try Vallejo metal sometime.
In case anyone is interested, go to Amazon and search "Tamiya 1/48 Ki-61" and it turns out that dealer has more than a few of these for the $35 delivered price (plus tax - $38.00). Also the Tamiya decals for the blotches if you want to do one of the 244th Sentai airplanes for $8.00 - overall a very good deal.
A very nice looking plane, Dale, love the finish.
Very nice build- your pictures and Tom's tip have me thinking about getting one of these myself!
Thanks to all for the positive comments!
Lovely build - some nice weathering to the NMF. Fantastic.
