I'm not certain if this is the correct place to post this but @bentwing is in intensive care as the result of a massive heart attack. Phone calls to him are heavily discouraged by the family but emails are ok if anyone would care to send best wishes and encouragement. That address is

  1. Thanks for this, Phillip. May he get well soon. I am off to sending him an email.

  2. Sad news. Please forward our best wishes.
I have marked this post as Exclusive to members so that Jim's personal information isn't exposed openly on the web.

  3. Good luck, Jim, let’s hope you’re back on the modelling bench before too long.

  4. Thanks for the heads-up! Adding him to my daily prayer list.

  5. Thanks for addressing this, Phillip.
Very sad news. Wishing Jim a quick recovery.

  6. Sorry to hear this news. Jim's a wealth of information especially when it pertains to Corsairs'. Wish him a speedy recovery.

  7. Oh my... This is horrible news. Jim is such a good guy.

He recently sent me one of his last remaining Squadron Corsair books, and he was kind enough to autograph it for me too. I told him about how, (when I was a kid), I had saved up money from mowing yards with a push mower, and bought my very first aircraft book. It was his first Squadron Signal Corsair in Action book from 1977.

I still have it to this very day...

As the years went by, I ended up purchasing almost every book he wrote on the F4U and the Skyraider.

It turns out I was missing one, and when he found out about this, he sent me the missing book free of charge, and he signed it for me too as a bonus.

Jim is a GREAT fellow, and his expert knowledge of the Corsair has helped me on several occasions with research needed on several of my recent tribute builds.

Jim, if you are able to sign in and read this, I will definitely keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

    Get well soon buddy...

  8. Hey folks, it's me again. Thanks to all for your thoughts and concerns regarding Jim. Here's a brief update on his condition:

He's off the ventilator now but still in intensive care and still unconscious at this time; progress is slow but it is progress. His family is very appreciative of the email support and prayers offered by his multitude of friends.

Louis Gardner's comments regarding Jim's unselfishness and willingness to share very much define the man. When Jim Wogstad and I began our adventures with Replica in Scale back in 1973, Jim Sullivan was among the very first of the "heavy hitters" in the realm of aviation photography to jump on board and offer his services and considerable (even then!) collection to us. That's the way things have been with Jim for all of the 50 or so years I've been privileged to know him. He's very special. He's one of the good guys.

Keep those thoughts and prayers coming, ya'll, and let's help him get past this setback and back into the saddle!

    • That is great news Phillip, wow that brings back memories Replica in Scale, one of my go to for references back in the day before the internet and the various modeling sites. Glad that our prayers are being answered and that Jim recovers with quality of life. He has been a force in the modeling world and one who has shared over the years. Thanks for the positive news, now totally out of the woods.

The book Jim autographed and sent me was called "Fighting Colors F4U Corsair in Color".

Over the past 5 or so years, Jim and I have shared a lot of Corsair related stuff back and forth. It just happens to be my favorite aircraft hands down...

I sent him some pictures I had personally taken back in the mid to late 1970's of Harry Doan's full scale Corsairs. In turn he shared with me some of his various photos that he had in his massive collection.

He had previously assisted me with doing some research on some local Florida based F6F Hellcats that were used for training during WW2 here at some of our airfields that were former US Navy training bases. Jim also helped me a lot with my latest Imodeler posting on this "Lt. Mayberry Corsair".

Only recently did I share the story with him about how one of his books was my first ever book purchase. Ever... and how I still own it to this very day. (the one I posted a photo of in my last reply).

I am SO happy to hear that he is now off the ventilator. This is good news, and a step in the right direction.

Thank you VERY much for the latest updates. Please keep us informed if you hear anything else. My wife and I will continue to pray for him, his family, and a speedy recovery.

Jim is an awesome guy, and today's world could use a few more like him.

  10. All, it is with great sadness that I report Jim Sullivan's death last night. I had just responded to an email from Spiros telling him that Jim was stable but that is no true. Jim Sullivan is gone.

  11. Guys,

I had just responded to an inquiry from Spiros asking about Jim and am saddened to inform you all that Jim passed yesterday.
