Stalag Luft III - I Wanted Wings - Button Nose

One of my favourite paint schemes here in the 56thFG 62nd FS P47 D-22 LM*A bar Flown by Albert Knafelz I have always wanted to try and paint this but as I'm not a modeller in the true sense I'm more an 8th Airforce enthusiast and collector of books so when I knew there was a new set of decals available off I went to re paint another die cast donor it all went well I had a few hiccups where I went back in and changed lines to the RAF Green on the engine cowlings to the wing route I first had this painted with the Ocean Grey going all the way under the wing on the fuselage going from the front leading edge meeting the trailing edge I had miss interpreted the dirty underside for paint so knowing the under side is NMF once that was corrected I went in for the fun whispy patten……. it wasn't fun painting at that detail for me at 1/72 scale was not easy and tense ten minutes I had my first attempt I went back in and cleaned it up made it more like the real thing but settled on what I could do.

The decals all went on ok and I miss lined the Stalag text a little high but all in all I'm very happy I was able to pull off such a complicated paint job with very little skill with an airbrush.

Some research

I found a Photo online I had not seen before of LMA bar showing one claim and 5 trains but after looking into it I noticed that there were not present on the well know photo where James McClure is riding by on his unicycle.

After talking to a friend this Sort of makes sense because the FW190 that the cross represents was only a damaged on 25th February and the trains are a bit 'iffy' anyway he only ever claimed 1 loco destroyed on 4th May.

The Me109 that he is credited with was on 4th July and that would go along with the D-Day stripes over-painted as in the other photos, which would be about 10th July or just after.

The last of his ground claims which were railroad targets happened on 24th May.

So no claims were added to the model
