Airfix 1/48th Westland Sea King HAS.2A
This is my recently completed Airfix 1/48th Westland Sea King. This kit is a vast improvement on the old Hasegawa kit and in particular is the inclusion of a fully detailed and equipped interior.
I have completed a couple of the Hasegawa kits, one as a SH-3D and the other a Westland Hu 5 version in Culdrose Rescue scheme.
I did wish to build an early version in the original Dark Blue scheme as orginally issued. The Airfix kit provides this option, but I moved one step on and modelled the kit as an HAS.2A. This included the 'barn door' in front of the intakes (in my case to cover an unsightly seem/gap) and a six bladed rear rotor.
So lovely is this kit that I went ahead and completed it before any aftermarket items were issued, thus no seat belts! As I like Sea Kings and this kit in particular, then I'm sure to build another version and likely include at least some aftermarket items.
Definitely a great model using the Airfix kit, Mark. I lived in Cornwall in the 1960s and really enjoyed going to the RNAS Culdrose air shows.
Got to love a Sea king. Westlands sold more around the world than Sikorsky did apparently. Winched from HAR3s a fair few times.
It looks an amazing kit. Nice job👍❤️
Really solid work and a very good-looking result. I think you guys are changing my mind about this kit.
That is an amazing looking SeaKing, Mark @markyp89
Will look great in the display cases you have in the back. Lots of nice kits there.
Excellent job, Mark!
Great job! I liked the mods you worked to build the version you wanted using the base kit. When I looked over the review pictures when the kit was first released, I thought I would love one for RCN and another for USN! Airfix is truly having a renaissance- first the new 1/48 Buccaneer and now the Sea King! Awesome!
Alas! I will not be buying any Airfix Sea Kings until I build my Hasegawa Sea King in the stash!
Beautiful Sea King.
Thanks for the appreciative comments.
I suspect Airfix will release a Commando HC.4 version next. However I would really like them to explore Sikorsky versions, as those USN schemes are so attractive. However there plenty Westland export versions that can more easily be covered
