Tamiya Sturmvogel

February 27, 2024 · in Aviation · · 8 · 287

This is the classic kit in . Had started it and a Monogram Schwable way back in 2016. Had wanted to build a plane base at Rheine since I had been TDY at that base when it had F-4F Phantom IIs.

Well hit a few hiccups like not installing the windscreen before painting. And not knowing to paint the cockpit 66. Then being unsatisfied on the Monogram kit with the splotches of 74 and 75 for building an early 262 belonging to the test unit. So they both languished. The Monogram kit became a paint mule.

Now I finally decided to finish the Tamiya kit. Really couldn't do much to fix the cockpit. But did respray with Vallejo the 82/82/76 free hand on the fuselage while using Tamiya tape masks to keep the hard edges on the wings. Alas Weiss B decals from Monogram tended to silver while the Tamiya ones showed a propensity to shatter.

And here it is, finally rescued from the shelf of doom. Still got plenty of 262 kits in stash to get better.

  1. Great that you decided to finish the Tamiya Schwalbe, David! Great result, pity that the decals did not behave.

  2. Good save, David, we all live and learn.

  3. Great save. That one deserved to be finished.

  4. Glad you rescued this bird, David @kahu
Looks very nice in this camouflage scheme.

  5. Thanks everyone. When I started this kit had never attempted Luftwaffe camouflage and tried to use methods I thought would work. But as the early photos show, wasn't a success.

After painting three Fw 190Fs think this time around got better with the fuzzy splotches on the demarcation line. Just a matter of trigger work. Now if I could get consistent with the squiggles and maybe a brighter 82 be truly in business.

  6. A nice 262 - such a lovely shaped aircraft!

  7. Nice Schwalbe!
Go to see it saved from the SoD or a life as paint mule.
