All his own work

March 17, 2024 · in Armor · · 37 · 264

One of my students here in China likes tanks and guns, and is interested in my models, so I decided to let him have a try at building this Tamiya 1/35 scale Mutt.

He had never done anything like this before.

The instructions are in English, so good practice for him.

I showed him how to identify the parts.

Cut them off the sprue.

Clean them up a bit and cement them together.

Next the painting, he tried to copy the rather complicated camouflage scheme.

And painted the figure as well.

Not too bad for a first attempt, he’s just ten years old.

Thanks for looking, happy modelling.

  1. Congratulations to your student, George! A wonderful result!

  2. I don't even want to see him in a competition when he's 20!

  4. What a nice thing to do George, it's way better than my first attempt.

  5. Super stuff George. Your student has done a great job. So good to see their efforts rewarded when people like you George give the time and encouragement. Fantastic 😊

  6. You are are a good mentor George, and a proud one also 😉
Hope the kid goes on building more and more

  7. Yes, I hope so too, Pedro @holzhamer, unfortunately it’s not a popular hobby in China.

    • That's interesting, since everyone says Trumpeter's main market is domestic. Of course, "not popular" in a country with the population of China might be far larger than the hobby here in teh US.

      • Thanks, Tom @tcinla. I think the main thing is there’s no history of making models in China. Many of us were introduced to the hobby by our fathers, as I was, or another older relative, that doesn’t happen here. Also the kids’ parents view studying as a priority leaving very little time for hobbies. I had a hard time explaining to his mother that it was educational. We have a toy shop in the city centre which used to stock a few Trumpeter kits, mainly battleships, but no cement or paint. Our nearest model shop is in Beijing, a two hour flight away.

  8. Everyone's first model should look as nice. Hopefully he had fun with it.

  9. Yeah, you’re right, Dan @dbdlee, fun is the most important part.

  10. Good on ya, George! 👍 Thanks for introducing a new member of the scale modeling community! He will remember your help for the rest of his life, and that's really making an impact on someone's life. 😊 And that is the coolest part 😎 of this very cool story @chinesegeorge! 🥃
